I think the problem with AI as peer reviewer is the same idea as "blockchain will enhance trust". It's a solution-shaped technical object. Oh will blockchain enhance trust because nobody can edit the distributed ledger except the humans who input the data originally who you already have to TRUST.

I think the problem with AI as peer reviewer is the same idea as "blockchain will enhance trust". It's a solution-shaped technical object. Oh will blockchain enhance trust because nobody can edit the distributed ledger except the humans who input the data originally who you already have to TRUST.

In the same way, automating the labor of peer review seems straightforward. It's labor, lets fuckin Fordist that shit. It's labor of "someone who you can trust as a person looked at this". The AI is wire-mother. It appears as someone you're supposed to trust but you don't.

And if you inject that lack of trust, then the whole point of peer review fails. "Oh maybe your model was weighted incorrectly" and suddenly my paper isn't good enough?

What academic discipline do people think produces the best lecturers? I'm tempted to think it's history even though my style is highly influenced by a philosopher, but that can also be my bias.

I genuinely do not understand academics who have large personal libraries that they have sitting behind them on zoom calls. I work at a collection of books beyond any possible personal accumulation. I only buy a book if I'm going to mark it up or reference it more than once a year.

I think being a librarian makes me averse to using full bookshelves as decoration. Individual art books? Absolutely, great decoration. But just a shelf?

I had a dream where i was talking a religion class and the assignment was a word search puzzle and the professor was asking questions and you could find the answers in the word search as a way to give the students hints. I have no idea if this would be doable in a classroom but my dream thought so

Like, even if there were high rates of regret about transition - which is clearly not the case - that *still* wouldn't be a valid reason to deny access to gender-affirming care.

You don’t want late night libraries you want union halls

"Libraries should be open late as an alternative to the bar" is going around some groups I'm in again and I just Y'all can't convince enough people to fund libraries to be open during the day with reasonable pay and expectations Where do you think you're finding night shift premium pay money
