I am reading The Great Gatsby and enjoying how disgusted Tom is that Gatsby wears pink suits. Roommate and I debated whether Tom's disgust for the pink suits was homophobic, classist, or just because Tom has bad taste.

Also: is it a hot take to say that I don't think this book is actually about the American Dream, really? I know that's THE take! But my roommate (who teaches it for highschool) has been saying this for years, and I think he's right!!!!!

The American dream is ultimately about the romanticization of the diligent worker rising from nothing. Work is ennobling, deeply embedded in American values. Gatsby is ashamed of his labour and disguises it. The American Dream is a narrative he refuses. He covets the appearance of *idle* wealth.

The Cinema Museum in London is trying to buy its building and they are about 1/4 of the way to their goal. It's a converted Victorian workhouse where Charlie Chaplin lived and worked as a child. Could you share or donate a bit? www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/the-cinema...

crowdfunder.co.ukThe Cinema Museum: HELP US BUY OUR HOMEAfter 40 years of uncertainty, we have a chance to secure our home. We need £500,000 to purchase our home and we have five months to do it!

I know #Bioware closing is due to a lot of factors and Bioware has been on life support for years, but thinking of how many Queer stories it told, it feels appropriate to shout into the void: if you want Queer art to survive you have to support it, even if it isn't always good.

I don't mean support uncritically. But Queer stories are being viciously repressed more than ever. Bioware wasn't perfect but its closure radicalizes me to buy Queer books and Queer games and listen to Queer podcasts and ensure our stories find new spaces and RECOMMEND THEM to people.

I am glad to wake up in an Alberta that chose Canada, but furious to wake up in an Alberta that chose to show how deeply stupid and racist they are with the rest of the votes. Glad we poured millions into this instead of healthcare and education! But then the UCP WANTS to gut those things, huh?

#SFFChat i find it sooo interesting to think about ghosts in the future and how such an ancient concept adapts to technology. How will we conceive of the soul 1000 years from now you know?

SFFChat@sffchat.bsky.social

#SFFChat Q2: What role does horror and/or the monstrous play in SFF?

#SFFChat my name is Lin, I write queer genre bendy sff, and I love ghosts! I wrote my PhD dissertation on how ghosts get goopy in the 19th century thanks to science.

SFFChat@sffchat.bsky.social

Hello #SFFChat! It's spooky month, which means I get to ask spooky questions (I'll do my best to vary things up 🤣). Q1: Introduce yourself & share your favourite monster or your favourite horror movie (no books/authors)!

I think there's a difference in writing between characters who are sexy and who are physically attractive and everyone assumes the first comes from the second but oh boy it DOESN'T.

As someone who wrote a dissertation on A Christmas Carol... the point is not that Scrooge doesn't have technically LOGICAL reasons for exploiting his workers, but that we all have a MORAL responsibility towards our fellow man.

The A.V. Club@avclub.com

The film, which stars Johnny Depp, will try to find the "gray area" in A Christmas Carol. www.avclub.com/scrooge-gray...

Still thinking about this hours later tbh! The scene where Scrooge’s own utilitarian arguments are thrown back against him seems so significant? “Are there not poorhouses?” Also “mankind was my business!” rejects the logic of the capitalist using the capitalist’s own language.

This is going to sound like the most obnoxious humble brag but today I found out from my doctor that I literally gave so much blood it made me anemic. Six months recovery 💪💪💪 Hope they savour that B+ brew like fine wine. Blood Canada you are my revenant.

I was inspired to do this vibe comp grid for my upcoming book, Dead New World! It's spooky, it's noirish, it's funny, it's Queer, it's romantic, it's got ghosts AND cyber kidnappings... I was really trying hard to bend every genre.

Some exciting Shaderunners news! Alex has been working really hard to make sure the comic flows for the vertical format.

Everyone who works in visual mediums needs to rediscover old technicolor films and realize they don't just pulse with color and fashion and stylization, they also sometimes have plots that involve things like cursed marriages, champagne beds and Paul Newman exploding. (What A Way to Go!, 1964)

Academic Disney Con't. Alright did you guys know that there's a Macbeth quote in Disney's Beauty and the Beast and it's used in such a rich and layered and gendered way I actually had to break out the timestamps for this one. Review: letterboxd.com/wisteriajone...
