I started in electronics & now work in IT. I talk nonsense here about hobby stuff: Electronics, STEM, IoT, Meshtastic, Vintage 8-bit computers. My dog is called Holly & she's much cuter than me | West Sussex, UK | Views are my own. Sometimes I'm right.

Looking for things to do, I decided to install a Tailscale VPN between one of my Debian servers and my Android phone. It took about 3 mins to get it working. Boring. /In a good way.

Can't login.. incorrect password. Can't login.. incorrect password. Gets password reset email. Uses saved password from Bitwarden. Told to choose another password - must not reuse previous ones. Quits. Logs in OK with existing saved password. Is this the new multi factor authentication?

For a dev team I manage, each sprint was given a nickname that's a famous person from computing history. I just noticed the name I gave to the current sprint is 'Hamilton'. Bless.

According to MIT News, Margaret Hamilton died at the age of 90. "A profoundly influential computer scientist best known for leading the software engineering team at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab during NASA’s Apollo program". This famous photo 🔽 inspired the For All Mankind character Margo Madison.

ah damn, RIP Margaret Hamilton. she took safety-critical software engineering seriously, and got people to the moon and back. news.mit.edu/2026/margare...

Brainfart / senior moment: I ordered 28-pin, ATMEGA328-sized, ZIF sockets instead of 20-pin ones. 1 board is ready to go - minus socket. 😣

That time your big bag of 100nF disc decoupling caps goes walkies. 😣 I'll have to split them into lots and store in multiple places. I've some bead types but they are wider and will look fugly if bent to fit. I have standards y'know. Couldn't even find one on the floor behind the bench. 😄

Found the DIP switches. Just waiting for the decoupling caps to finish off a batch of Versa64carts for the Commodore 64 so I don't have to swap EPROMs. I might have to consider a multi-firmware thingy sometime.

This Commodore 64 board boots into DesTest with RAM bit errors but they clear after a warm up and all tests will run. Without the cart, I get a display with no text. The PLA was dead and the two already-replaced mux chips were iffy. Seems thermal-ish at this point, and maybe ROM/s later. Any tips?

One Calendar's Android widget didn't show all events from my work Outlook calendar, so I couldn't trust it for reminders / planning. Outlook's widget just gave a sync error for my personal calendar. Then I found KashCal on F-Droid, and it 'just works' - both sets of appointments in one view. Yay!

94 years ago today, John Logie-Baird & the Baird Television company televised the Epsom Derby live to cinemas..

Behold, Walkers have produced a crisp flavour "Inspired by Spanish Queso"...using Cheddar and Mozzarella* 🙃 Ciao, duck. *And all the other...stuff listed.

Tesco has the match night covered: * Get pissed on wine and lager * Hydration breaks! * Over indulge and puke everywhere. * Spend the next day clamped to the toilet, and washing your clothes. Enjoy!

I have acquired an AVO 8 Mk.4 meter - very generously gifted via Freecycle. Apparently it's not working. I'll check it over shortly and see what's what. The +ve probe tip is missing, as is one clip. The right case strap is inside so I'll have to brush up on my leather sewing. Lovely bit of kit.

Smart people, have you used successfully any of the e-ink shelf label displays from AliExpress with https://www.openepaperlink.de/ I'm designing a system to display occupancy info outside meeting rooms, with no wiring, and central control from a room booking system. Ideas appreciated.

I love seeing and reading here about the stuff people get up to with vintage computing, electronics and STEM-related things. Other matters I'll keep in my news RSS feeds. To that effect, this filter list is very helpful.

Just heard from someone that they didn't get a job they interviewed for. Apparently one negative the company noted was that when they offered a drink of tea, coffee or water, he asked for water...and "people should always carry their own water". /smh

I am intrigued by the computer at the start of this clip. It looks like an AI has had a go at making a picture of a Commodore PET and got it wrong. The keyboard is missing a few keys and the disk drives would be an aftermarket add on, and then a separate monitor? Anyone recognise it?

I seem to have bought a boxed 'For parts or not working' Commodore 64. How did that happen!? Looking forward to seeing what state it's in. #Commodore

Mrs Linker asked whether I ordered a pizza recently because there's a charge for Domino's on our credit card. Nope. Uh, oh...maybe a fraudulent charge...? Oh, wait, it says 'Domains' 😆
