Midwestern nerd, weird animal person, dad. he/him

I saw a Mini Cooper SE on the road yesterday and it reminded me of the goatee I started wearing in the ‘90s and held onto well into the current decade.

I was mentioning the opossum and raccoons to someone and they thought I was describing a single blended family and no, but I wish it was. Like the possum isn’t the stepdad, he’s the dad who stepped up.

The times & locations I see a lone opossum & a small family of raccoons are consistent enough that I’m pretty sure I’m seeing the same specific ones that have moved into our corner of the forest and am in danger of naming them. No photos due to darkness & distance but here’s a starfish I saw later.

The 5k was a Halloween thing, so there were a lot of people and dogs in costumes. Tons of kigus, some spandex. One corgi was dressed as a baked potato with a plush blob of sour cream and a square pat of butter on their back.

Giant Dog and I walked a dog friendly 5k this morning. Highlights included a basset hound who had clearly not been consulted about taking such a long walk and periodically lay down in the middle of the path for a rest.

Thank you, YouTube ads. In one image Bugs Bunny is horrified to see Betty Rubble using the toilet while peeping through her bathroom window, but in the other he’s clearly into it. In both, Betty obliviously continues reading The Joy of Cooking on the toilet while soiling her dress.

If werewolves change at moonrise and change back at moonset, you’re going to have times when that’s like 5pm and 8am respectively. Dude’s commuting to and from work in broad daylight and everybody just sort of pretends not to notice the wolf person in the car next to them or in line at Timmy’s.

I mean it’s set in medieval Europe, everything was scratchy and uncomfortable back then.

‘Wicker’ stars Alexander Skarsgård as a man made entirely of wicker, complete with a rock-hard wicker dick. But what about splinters? Bacteria? Degradation? Would it be advisable, from a sexual-health perspective, to mount a basket dick? We asked a gynecologist: vulture.visitlink.me/DNQwX5

On a recent Some More News, Cody described artificial grape flavor as tasting “not like grape, but like a clown’s memory of a grape”, which pretty much nails it.

I had the NPR Politics podcast on in the car yesterday. They were talking about the AK senate race, and the Kid asked me “Which side are they on?” So I had to explain about journalists historically and theoretically being impartial reporters of stuff rather than picking a side, which felt weird.

That said, the fact his reaction to people talking about a political topic was to ask what position they’re advocating for is somehow both depressing and encouraging.

Socks and sandals are nothing new! These well-preserved woollen socks from Egypt feature a split-toe design allowing them to be worn with thonged sandals to keep toes cosy in chilly weather some 1,500 years ago! 🩴🧦 V&A Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology

Someday the Kid will go to his first tiki bar, get handed a drink in a mug shaped like a moai, and think “oh, like Squidward’s house.”

When I joined the Kwik Trip loyalty program they had a reward of a shirt reading “No Ordinary Chicken” and “Chicken With Rizz”. Fortunately for my wallet this rollled off before I earned enough points because if I had such a shirt I’d have been pretty much obligated to get a rooster partial.

We may never know how many advances we’re missing out on due to modern lab safety standards, with chemists no longer eating or smoking in the lab and tasting something unexpectedly yummy or tripping balls.

Saw a car with a “DEFUND PAW PATROL” bumper sticker. Didn’t get close enough to see if the driver was Mayor Humdinger or just, like, anyone else.

Ian Fleming died years before the making of the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), but it’s worth noting that having a female lead named “Truly Scrumptious”, a character not appearing in the novel, is exactly the kind of shit Fleming would have come up with.

A reminder that you can buy internet enabled “smart” ovens for under a thousand dollars, but you can save yourself some money by just buying a can of gasoline and burning your house down yourself.

Occurred to me recently that JD Vance is the exact type of guy that thinks he can pull one over on Columbo

Me watching a promo for a documentary on the Australian woman who poisoned her in-laws by serving them food prepared with death cap mushrooms: “Huh, I haven’t had Beef Wellington for quite a while…”

Back in high school a friend described a nightmare he had where dinosaur bones rose from the earth, cracked open, and released a plague of painful burrs that eventually covered *everything* and decades later I still think about this whenever I get burrs on me and it wasn’t even my dream.

Just got back from two nights of camping with the Kid and his scouting pack. Couldn’t ask for better weather for it, but I’m ready for a proper night’s sleep with a bathroom that isn’t a pit toilet a hike away.

Today I learned that an Action Packer is a trademarked name for a line of storage totes sold by Rubbermaid and not a gender affirming garment worn by trans men.

In 2004 when the Illinois GOP’s policy of nominating anyone with the last name “Ryan” fell apart, they tried to draft Ditka to run for the senate. He eventually declined, citing his temper. The party went with Alan Keyes instead, who lost by over 40% to an obscure state senator named Barack Obama.

Ditka would later call not running his biggest regret and said he could have beat Obama, instead we had to wait decades for Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) to demonstrate how well football coaching skills transfer to the senate by blocking hundreds of military promotions and picking arguments with furries.

Getting shrunk down to less than a foot tall was definitely inconvenient, but Steve found it hard to be anything short of delighted when he saw how big Ritz crackers were for him now.

How much would it cost for a streaming service to buy the rights to and film a single performance of legendary Broadway flops like Carrie the Musical, Capeman, and the Lestat musical? I would in all seriousness love to watch the Carrie musical and I don’t think I’m alone.

I’m leaving out Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, because that sounds like an expensive mess to put on even just a single performance for streaming.

Digger (2026) hasn’t met expectations at the box office, but Tom Cruise deserves some credit for taking a risk and the make up crew’s work is genuinely impressive.

I’m not saying sports mascots have to be native to the team’s area or anything. There are no bears in Chicago or royals in Kansas City and that’s fine. But flamingos are so Florida coded that I keep thinking “What are you doing in Wheaton?”

Annie Jacobsen is clearly willing to go the extra mile to promote her books.
