For you youngs who weren't alive for this: Understand that the Chicks were an early rollout of the far right intimidation that we see targeting judges, members of Congress, and ICE protestors now.

omg The Chicks just brought out James Talarico on stage 👀

It's insane that the president is this incredibly stupid and, moreover, weirdly proud of it. "You know, I never knew what the hell was a circle was. Most people don't, you know. Well, a circle has three sides and three corners. I call the corners 'rutabagas' but Democrats won't tell you that."

Trump: "When I see that Talafreako in Texas. So he's been a vaygan all his life. He's a vaygan vaygan, I didn't even know what the hell a veygan was. A veygan is vegetables. A vaygan is eating a piece of lettuce all day long."

JD Vance: “If we can’t reconstitute white male privilege in its fullest extent, let’s burn this motherf@@ker to the ground” is the Gospel According to Peter Thiel in full.

Tom Joscelyn@tomjoscelyn.bsky.social

Look how casually Vice President JD Vance mentions the possibility of political violence (“kind of insane that we didn’t have a revolution”) when discussing white men’s grievances. White identity politics (white nationalism) is central to his worldview.

More originalist baloney from Alito. When has originalism ever led one of its adherents to a result that they did not also happen to favor as policy? I guess that’s either a remarkable coincidence, or evidence of robust bad faith. apple.news/ACn4mQ2uDS7C...

The NYT has run “process” stories about Trump’s depredations of [insert current outrage] for the last two days on their landing page, today’s subject being the attempted destruction of the Kennedy Center. This is a dodging of their responsibility to be appalled by his actions.

All you need to know is that Trump is throwing a party for himself in QAnon-land (Dallas) and due to his shockingly low approval rating—33%; compare to Zohran Mamdani's 70%—MAGA politicians in close races are MIA MAGA is a rusty pickup chassis on blocks in the side yard of a condemned brothel

Always a good time to remind ourselves that the US Confederacy was, even judged in historical context, evil -- a pathetic, morally repellant movement led by some the smarmiest narcissists ever known. It had no redeeming features & should forever be regarded with disgust & contempt.

It’s amazing what can be accomplished when you don’t grease up your entire body and shamelessly slide up Donald’s wretched, loose, flaccid and utterly repulsive asshole.

Honestly I love shit like this. It just radiates so strongly how fast these guys are swirling down the bowl. Strong 2006 vibes.

Is anyone else sick of the nonfiction book gimmick of subtitling every such book in a three-part “how —, —, and — created/explains/etc.” life, the universe, and or everything)or using the “The History of (noun) in (#) (another noun)” e.g., “The History of the Middle Ages in 10 Epic Bowel Movements”

The problem with Woke 1 was that it didn't go far enough and the fact that Stephens is even trying this shit is proof

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

The problem with Woke 1 was its lack of proportionality. That's why everyone who tweeted about how racism is bad should be sent to the Hague. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/o...

Since the WH press are typists, not journalists, they just need a quote from an unnamed “WH spokesperson” to put in their story. They don’t care that it’s lies all the way down. So her staff gives them what they want.

Not even close. I've written nine on the original 13 book contract but we signed a 10 book extension on top of that, so if I write a book a year I'll be out of contract in 2040.

TS Luikart@tsluikart.bsky.social

That reminds me, John... seems to me, you've all but fulfilled your big contract, haven't you?

Not to mention someone has to take those children to those extra appointments, taking time off work and other responsibilities, and pay copays for each visit. A reporter needs to ask Trump and RFfK Jr if they EVER went to one of his five kids’ doctor’s appointments.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

Yes, let’s burden both new parents and pediatricians with FIVE doctor visits instead of one for absolutely no legitimate medical reason. A masterstroke, sir.

A panel I was on at the Celsius festival got an audience question along the lines of “there’s so much romantasy around now, what about the men?” and my response was basically “men can write romantasy.” It turns out this was not actually the issue, but still. Nobody’s stopping them!

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

Well, literature (as art and commerce) did a very good job expanding both who are writers and who are readers, and so dudes (especially straight white ones) compete in an industry where they are a market segment but not necessarily *the primary* market segment, and that fact freaks some of them out.
