One of those many barleys we used to celebrate on #JacobinDay

Guinevere of Mason@guinevereofmason.bsky.social

Guinevere's Dialect. Bigg. As in market. A variety of hardy barley that was grown in the north. 1st recorded 1466. Scandinavian. Compare Old Icelandic bygg. It's still grown on Orkney & is called ....bere.⬇️. That's an OE word and originally meant..🧵

Interesting POV (& personally I'd trust Michael Sheen in a crisis well before James Blunt, & not just because he's Welsh) (ok maybe a bit because he's Welsh)

Hilariously James Blunt thinks the three traitors are the most trustworthy...thank heavens these sort of people aren't defending the country....Oh!

Excellent exhibition if you're in Newcastle

📷 Some great photos by local street photographer Jan Panke, inside "Under Development" at Newcastle Contemporary Art. An exhibition of 50+ years of documentary photography from Tyneside and East London, asking who shapes our changing cities. Free until 29 Nov. 🔗 sidegallery.co.uk/whats-on/...

This photo reminds me that when I was at primary school it became a bit of a fad to have a ginormous smelly leek pinned across your chest on St David's Day, rather than the neat baby ones sold specially for wearing (cerainly no daffodils)

Interesting, though this link didn't work for me - try eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/id/eprint/24.... It's not something I'd ever thought about as a young archivist, though plenty of intrusive photos in eg MOH reports (via @christinajriggs.bsky.social)

The Ethics of Medical Photography Toolkit is out! eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/id/eprint/24... We hope this toolkit will accompany you in your research, teaching, archival or curatorial practice as a tool to think through ethical issues like sensitivity, consent, anonymity, access, origins and care

The US has no moral authority in *any* sphere #Barbarism

The New York Times@nytimes.com

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com “We don’t have the moral authority to tell other countries to ban child marriages as long as we retain this abusive practice at home — defended by impractical zealots at both ends of the American political spectrum,” our columnist @nickkristof.bsky.social writes.

So I wonder if Gateshead Council would entertain a "request" to light the bridge for Show Racism the Red Card if someone paid....

It's a take (though a peculiarly US one)

The New York Times@nytimes.com

The student protests in the streets and chaos in the markets of France are rooted in the country’s struggles to fund its social welfare state. Hundreds of schools around the country have closed, dozens have been damaged, and many people have been arrested or injured.

📷 Show us Newcastle now. We’re inviting young people to photograph the city as they see it. No fancy kit needed, a phone is fine. Part of Under Development at Newcastle Contemporary Art (NCA), with selected work shown in an exhibition and newspaper. Submit: sidegallery.co.uk/blog/newc...

Having done jury service for the first time last year I didn't understand this policy. While it's obviously expensive to administer, there's no shortage of jurors, whereas there are lots of empty courts, shortage of lawyers & inefficiency in bringing prisoners in

The High Level Bridge - I'd argue Tyneside's first visual marker into modernity. It's a pioneer too - the first bridge in the world to feature a twin deck for 2 separate modes, designed by 2 of the most brilliant minds Britain has ever borne. Free to read on Patreon!
