One of the regular complaints about rooftop solar subsidy schemes is that it only assists those who can afford to invest in rooftop solar - but as this is demonstrating, those subsidies protect the grid for those who can't afford the investment. Rooftop solar has benefit of the commons effects.

I'm disturbed by people thinking that things are business as usual with regard to the US. The only possible answer I can consider is that they're not paying enough attention, but even that is difficult to reconcile; paying any attention at all should be sufficient.

There are very few services that need really high uptime. Emergency warning systems are one of those that do. This Emergency WA outage is an absolute howler. No shade and and every support to those working on recovery.

You know the burnout is cooking when you're considering taking a sick day just so you can work with teams and outlook not running. 😮‍💨🥴

“This cover-up is a national scandal. It confirms that Australia’s key regulators are either incompetent or captured by the gas industry, or both,” said @markogge.bsky.social. “That there are no consequences for gas companies failing to act on a major leak of methane for 20 years is a disgrace."

Read the thread, but tldr, there's no evidence to back the claim.

Here's fun. The Business Council of Australia put out a press release and new report about how to make healthcare more efficient. One of the big claims in the press release: "AI has the potential to free up 30 per cent of a clinician’s time, allowing them to spend more time with Australians"

An M.I.T. study found that 95% of companies that had invested in A.I. tools were seeing zero return. It jibes with the emerging idea that generative A.I., “in its current incarnation, simply isn’t all it’s been cracked up to be,” johncassidysays.bsky.social writes.

newyorker.comThe A.I.-Profits Drought and the Lessons of HistoryLike the steam engine, electricity, and computers, generative artificial intelligence could take longer than expected to transform the economy.

The fun part for me is, I don't hear coherent counterarguments. If they existed, I have no doubt I would be hearing them constantly.

"We're one of the biggest gas exporters in the world, and we get next to nothing for offshore LNG. "That should be on the table." Climate change should be front and centre at this week's Economic Roundtable says Senator David Pocock, and we couldn't agree more! #auspol @davidpocock.bsky.social

The Productivity Commission has floated an idea to expand the fair use provision, which would make the kind of scraping AI companies do to train ChatGPT et al legal. Authors and other creatives are rightly outraged. NB: this isn't the first time the PC has come for book publishing.

I welcome Tim Wilson sharing his opinions on WFH and 'professional apartheid and prejudice'. The body of evidence that he should not be taken seriously on any matter, ever, grows.

Reporting today confirms large quantities of Western Australia’s domestic gas reserves are being exported via Woodside’s North West Shelf project, and the federal and Western Australian governments are letting it happen. The Australia Institute warned of precisely this situation last August.

Jillian Segal's interview on ABC730 last night revealed her to be utterly unable to provide even basic examples of things she alleges in her report are happening. Her report is a farrago of distortion and lies. Treat it with the contempt it deserves

@mrjamesob.bsky.social 'I love you, but' re: Chancellor's tears, you surprised me when you seemingly suggested no harm is done if someone threatens you harm, but ultimately doesn't follow through. The mental stress in-between is real and takes a physical toll, and I expected you to recognise that.

West Australians reading the latest budget should be outraged: "Australia is being robbed of its resources and our governments are entirely complicit," said @markogge.bsky.social speaking to ABC. "WA motorists will be paying 6x the amount in car rego fees as the gas industry pays in royalties."

The US bombing Iran is a flagrant breach of the international rules-based order, said Allan Behm, special adviser at the Australia Institute. Australia should have “made clear we are a country that stands up … for the rules-based order”. #auspol

C'mon, ABC News. Why are you burying the numbers? Elsewhere I'm hearing reports of 11 million plus. 'Tens of thousands' in the lead isn't really cutting it.

Have some wholesome.

God have mercy on the soul of anyone that has to deal with GoDaddy support. For the love of all that is sweet and good in the world, do not use GoDaddy.

I haven't really seen anyone talking about how polling failed this election? It was supposed to be tight and we got a landslide.

I finally got around to playing Outer Wilds. Well worth a look, especially if you are a fan of Subnautica. The only downside is that the performance on Linux can be hit and miss.
