PSA for the American (North, Middle, and South, I presume) collaborators: Europe just did the whole clock changing thing. Prepare for some meeting time confusion if you meet at fixed times

Dear aspiring PhD student A lengthy, off-topic, AI-generated email which assumes I’m a man is never going to get me to agree to supervise you. Four today.

more AI is just straightforwardly going to make most science worse, since it makes it even easier to process your data without understanding what's actually going on.

Why do some colleagues from psych, cog neuro, etc., accept AI nonsense that all or almost all our science will be automated? I'm a bit flabbergasted. Yes, of course we'll need observations, always. But to say theory and modelling practice can be automated by AI is preposterous. Some basic points...

Thread.

1/9 How we approach school improvement. We're often quite good at identifying what needs to change, looking at the evidence & introducing new approaches. But I wonder whether we're always as careful about understanding what's already working, & why.

This is one of the most powerful depictions of health research-driven progress. No statistics required.

Lots of people citing this one: HIV went from a death sentence to…undetectable and people get to live a full and healthy normal life!!!! I mean that’s amazing.

I’ve written a book about building belonging in schools! It’s called Building Belonging in Schools! I argue that 1. kids feeling belonging is important just because But 2. If we want them to really learn lots, for rigour to be high, then they need to feel secure in their class. Preorder now!

related: I think a lot about the crazy expansion of "I work in education but not in schools" jobs over the last decade, and it bothers me a lot

Trevor Aleo@mraleosays.bsky.social

This is another thing that bothers me. What are the credentials of these “curricular specialists?” Who are these wizards of structuring & sequencing knowledge? Are they domain experts? Scholars? Curriculum theorists? Or is it just Teach for America grads who taught for 2 years before joining HMH?

People mention LLMs a lot in terms of "increasing accessibility" And as someone with intermittent cognitive disabilities, I *really* want to highlight how much work it is to sort through AI slop to try to find accurate information

James Baillie@jubalbarca.bsky.social

The main way the LLM boom has affected my life is to make a lot of things so much harder. It makes information filtering an even more constant grinding process than it already was: it's noticeably worsened search info quality and makes it harder to find anything reliable and/or human and/or real.

Wait what?? 2 degrees, NBCT, 20ish years experience… and I can only “deliver lessons”?! Bc designing them is… hard?!? lol okkk 👌🏻 Hanford should be disqualified from discussing education even if this were the only thing she ever said (it’s not 🙄).

Marcus Luther@marcusluther.bsky.social

“That’s actually not your job. Your job is not to design the lessons because, in fact, that’s really hard. And takes a lot of years of trial and error. Your job is to deliver the lessons and focus on the teaching and the students who are in front of you.” –Emily Hanford Disagree. Emphatically.

Important lessons about conservation- but also a lot more that that: human connections and the ability of people with different perspectives to work together towards a common goal.

“…It is a strict truism that no one would care about any exclusively theoretical uncertainty or certainty. For by definition in being exclusively theoretical it is one which makes no difference anywhere.” —John Dewey

Thinking about this quote in relation to how little consideration is given to human beings who are sentient & how much consideration is given to machines that cannot be. It tells you which group is considered to be an abstraction in the whole exercise.

Must-read 🧵. The Dept of Ed aims to dismantle public schooling entirely; state-level voucher programs are key to the plan. As my forthcoming book shows, the “school choice” models described below put religious liberty and consumer choice claims to segregationist ends, enshittifying ed for all.

Trump: "We have 5 states where your child goes off to school as Tim and comes back as Tammy 3 or 4 days later. It's true. And teachers make a decision. 'Goodbye Timmy I love you so much, I'll see you later.' And you say, 'Where's my son? My son is in the hospital.' Can you imagine?"

Schools should be filled with learning and laughter, not gunshots. Every day in this country, policy makers beholden to the gun lobby take the slaughter of children for granted—and a child can get his hand on a gun. We stand with Bend, Oregon and all communities harmed by gun violence.
