We now have a concentration camp in Florida. Stop pretending any of this is normal. If you claim to be a good person and you're not outwardly opposing this regime, you're not a good person. Be human.

Some people get into journalism because they’re skeptical of power, and others do so because they’re impressed by it. Moments like this are clarifying with respect to who’s who.

i know this is not an original observation but how is anyone supposed to know that slenderman in the back isn't there to sell your blood to peter thiel or whatever

What do you guys think of this as a title for my next critical theory YouTube video: “Your Essay Sucks Forever: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Chatbot”

There is nothing quite so clarifying about the typical American’s real politics than how they respond to *slight* inconveniences. The loudest denunciations I’ve heard of recent protests cited that they blocked traffic, and were therefore wrong. At least the bootlickers let you know who they are.

If our federal government wasn’t this much of a fucking joke, actually starting these riots to begin with, I’d be lobbying for an independent federal agency that does nothing but investigate the police. Permanent special grand juries in EVERY. MAJOR. CITY.

Americans jerk it to “2nd amendment solutions” 24/7, but the second Americans actually riot and fight back against oppression, they fall all over themselves to say that violence achieves nothing. If it achieves nothing, then why are you afraid of it?

I have my own opinion brewing as I’ve been watching the show, but what do you all think about The Handmaid’s Tale? Is its lack of trans representation a form of TERF ideology or trans erasure? Did anyone feel it was conspicuously silent on this aspect of gender?

Hot take: LLMs and transformer based Ai generally should be restricted to people over 18. They’re probably 10x the threat that the internet was to education when I was in school, with few of the advantages.

So, Google has actually done it. I now no longer use it to find basic information. It’s become as useless for that as any other LLM, and more so than most. Can’t think of a bigger product self own.

I'l submit that Podcasting has been incredibly effective at showing people celebrities and the rich are often morons and conmen, who have little of interest to say, and less understanding of the world. The damage this has done to capitalism is probably more than they realize.

Israel mistakenly kills terrorist instead of children.

In an effort to resharpen my Czech, I’m rewatching the sopranos in Czech dubbing, which I’ve done before, but as always, I find new things each time I do. The Pilot is little regarded today compared to the final season, yet it’s a low key masterpiece. 1/

Though Tony indulged in nostalgia for a simpler era in which honor and family are important, he easily resorts to the desecration of cultural institutions as a recourse for his immediate needs, which directly undermines the lesson he is trying to teach his daughter. /7

In 6 seasons, we will see the effect of this lack of moral conviction on Tony’s part, as meadow is systematically robbed of her ability to define herself as anything but a soprano, much to Tony’s obvious disappointment. The generational criticism is absolutely devastating. /8

Just as meadow looks up in wonder at the structure her ancestors built, we cut to Silvio Dante, who in the previous scene is also seen with his daughter, walking away from Vesuvio, the 3 generation Bucco family restaurant, which promptly erupts in flames. 5/

This, we learn, is Tony’s solution to an inability to reason with his uncle, who plans to kill a rival in the restaurant, potentially ruining its reputation. I find this pair of scenes not only a microcosm of the whole show’s conflicts, but also a canny encapsulation of the American experience /6

Yet he also finds himself unwilling or unable to reject the comforts of consumerism and criminality to embrace the cultural ideals he venerates. This is well trod territory, so I’ll zoom in on a pair of scenes. 3/

Tony brings his daughter to a church that he grandfather and great uncle built as immigrants and master stone masons. Meadow is whining about a trip to aspen that she’s not allowed to go on, and he tries to explain to her that her ancestors had pride in their identities and abilities. /4

Particularly I was struck by the central conceit of the episode, which will play out across all 6 seasons. Tony’s attempts to cohere his concept of his Italian heritage with the American experience, which he suspects has had a corrosive effect on his culture 2/

The worst thing about American politics isn’t the Republican Party. Evil and stupidity can’t win over time. They always lose eventually. No. The worst part is the Democratic Party, because they actually believe they’re reformers. And so no reform ever occurs.

HAHAHA. We represent the consummation of the total destruction of knowledge work as an avenue to class advancement HAHAHAHA so fucking funny.

Hold the phone. Scratch the record. Folks: people with an enormous financial and reputational stake in this becoming true... BELIEVE THIS WILL COME TRUE. Or say they do, anyway. Shall we examine the monumentally shaky syllogism at the core of this outlook statement? FUCK NO. 6/

"What does this mean? If AI can reliably execute long tasks, it reshapes industries, from knowledge work to automation-heavy fields." I want to stab myself in the brain stem with a number 2 pencil. If I can, it will dramatically reshape the functioning of my nervous system! fin/

This is what our industry has become in the age of Ai, TBH. Azeem is the product of this marrow deep certainty that solutions simply justify themselves by dint of their own existence. Has anyone been helped? Has anything been accomplished? Who the fuck knows? 4/

"[Clunky segue]And it’s not just coming from outside observers—insiders at major AI labs, including Anthropic co-founder Jared Kaplan, have signaled similar expectations. I take their claims very seriously [because reasons] 2027 (or sometimes 2028) keeps coming up." 5/

Why do I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I read this shit? Take a completely context-free statistic, apply an exponent, and then misapply the framework to something completely different! WHAT COULDN'T NOT GO WRONG. 2/

How is the supposed ability of Ai to complete a "long" task in any way applicable to an Ai "working" a "full" work day? There are so many gooey variables here, that the outcome is really completely meaningless. 3/
