In a world where I keep thinking I can’t get any more angry there’s always something that proves me wrong. We (scientists) have mandatory ethics courses that are supposed to prevent this kind of thing.

I am reading this right now and it has been fantastic from page one. Spyjinx in a delightfully eldritch city.

Anyway HAPPY FRIDAY I hope you are enjoying your day more than Special Agent Vycol "Everything Is Terrible" Ferec (not his real name) Today is a good day to buy WICKHILLS and get you some fantaspionage in a very safe (nice, safe) weird city! us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

Joan Osborne did Son of a Preacher Man on an early album but it wasn’t in her fall 2000 set. The crowd asked for it, she protested that they hadn’t rehearsed it, but the band started the intro anyway. She gave in and sang. I sprained my ankle on the way to the show, it was still worth standing for.

Favorite cover you saw live? Top of mind for me is FIDLAR *opening* their show with a ribcage-rattling cover of Beastie Boys's "Sabotage." Talk about One Weird Trick to make a crowd high-energy from the jump Recently: NIN covering "I'm Afraid of Americans"

One of her many good deeds, in addition to being one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th and 21st centuries. The world is richer for her having been in it and poorer for her being gone.

I was just talking to a friend today about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - new books every month, totally for free, for kids ages 1-5. My son was part of the program - this is a copy of the letter that came with his last book, right after his 5th birthday.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

Thread. Reacher (TV, have not tried books yet) has been one of my happy places the last couple of years. In a world where so many people who deserve consequences don't face them, it's pretty satisfying to see fictional people who deserve punching get punched (a lot).

Micah@rincewind.run

now that we know how the new season of Reacher is (excellent), a thread about why you should watch What If A Man Was Large, The Show, in the form of a Q&A

Also the music people involved know their way around a needle drop. There’s a use of Super Bon Bon in one prior season that still makes me happy.

Excited about both of these books. Carrick’s Rook and Rose trilogy was great and Wiswell’s Wearing the Lion was among my favorites last year.

My husband blew through the Victoria Goddard backlist about a year ago, and I'm rationing out my catching-up. The Hands of the Emperor focuses on a character who's quietly, determinedly, persistently working to make the world a better place and succeeding, often because he speaks truth to power. 3/?

This book is the best I've read this year. It's the award-nominated SFF debut of a mystery author. Great characters, intricate plotting. I saw just enough of the twists coming to feel smart but not so many that the book felt too easy. First in a trilogy continued next year. 2/?

You don’t hate country music, you just hate the same 100 songs of bootlicking corporatized trash about saluting the flag while drinking a beer in your truck at a football game next to your pretty silent wife in daisy dukes who also knows how to fish.

The Cleric Chih novellas are always something to look forward to.

A LONG AND SPEAKING SILENCE, Singing Hills #7, is out tomorrow! On the edge of the rainy season, the town of Luntien struggles with a refugee crisis, and one very young cleric and their hoopoe bird companion try to get the story. Which story? All of them. us.macmillan.com/books/978125...

Tom Waits is possibly the most glaring omission IMO (just look at the wide range of people who have covered his stuff), but it's a pretty decent list.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Who are the greatest living American songwriters? Our list includes Bob Dylan, Carole King, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey and more. See who else made the cut.

I was already in the middle of The Raven Scholar when this dropped and wow, what a book it is. Those of you who recommended it were not kidding. If you have been letting it idle in your TBR like I did for far too long it’s time to get reading.

I’m (still) the only candidate in this race who is neither a billionaire nor taking corporate PAC money. Our campaign is powered by tens of thousands of Californians. That’s who the next governor should be focused on—not themselves, not their donors, not any insiders.

Mine was probably The Village. I watched at least one subsequent Shyamalan on cable, but that was the last one I paid for.

fun question: what’s the maddest you’ve ever been leaving a movie theater? not necessarily worst movie you’ve seen, but the one that just pissed you off the most. mine is Batman v Superman

One of my bookseller besties from back in the day now has a small bookstore in BC. She's been surrounded by neighborhood construction that's disrupted business and could use some support. If you want to buy books, they ship to the US and Canada. If you just want to help, visit the GFM.

First new book purchase of the new year for me! Love this series.

My latest book The Starseekers is out today! And in a twist it’s oddly topical despite being set in the 1960s. NASA, student protests, humans vs computers, education, PBS, and museum heist are a few themes I can easily match to current headlines. Which makes it’s fun and very interesting 😅!
