Two weeks of jury service has changed my perspective on and relationship to the city. The working city. On Tuesday I departed from the lunchtime route that I had laid down the week before. I'd forgotten that Wheats Lane opens onto Paradise Square. We led a poetry walk through this ginnel in 2009.

These poets offer deep interiority, existential questioning, spiritual focus. In an automated age driven by speed, efficiency & data-ism, Donne challenges us with turbulent self-scrutiny; Herbert offers a quiet grammar of grace, attention, and human scale.

Every walk contains its ghosts. Someone repeatedly encountered during lockdown became part of our remembered landscape, then disappeared. “Blessings on her… her devotion to herons, and to morning light.” Have You Always Been Here? @longbarrowpress.bsky.social longbarrowpress.com/2026/09/18/h...

Day six. Am now self-medicating with reduced items from the baked goods section of Tesco. Can see why people turn to drink.

And so ends the first week of jury service, a week of faulty monitors, dysfunctional audio, a full-building evacuation (a juror was smoking in the WC), and other delays & interruptions which resulted in the case being tried in six different courtrooms. More bus replacement service than jury service.

A white van unlocks before its driver-to-be even leaves the house. The maroon trainers and the matching maroon gloves of the twins, jogging. An open garage – a whiff of sweat from the hulk grunting his deadlifts. longbarrowpress.com/2026/09/18/h...

Do buy this! If only for the heron postcards (just joking) - and especially if you're a fan of haiku.

Four days as a dishwasher in the canteen of a chemicals firm in a nondescript business park on the outskirts of Swindon. I was dismissed for being 'too thorough'.

This post is unavailable.

And so ends the first week of our kitchen refurb (several years overdue). On Tuesday, we found a hellmouth under the sink. On Wednesday, we located the bodged plumbing that gave rise to unsightly damp. Earlier today, we discovered a void behind a false plasterboard wall. I decided to investigate.
