Nine works that have stayed with me. Not included but included in my heart is virtually all of Terry Pratchett, as well.

ACPS needs to fix its shit. Protecting kids is one of the primary jobs of a school system

I am going to honor this by going to my local yarn store and buying yarn from a company that has just been bought by private equity so I can stock up before the enshittification begins.

Anti-Prime Day starts…NOW! 🥳 Today through midnight on 10/7, enjoy free shipping site-wide, all while supporting local, independent bookstores.

The specter of communism, migrant caravans... what old chestnut are republicans going to revive next? Color-coded threat levels? The heartbreak of psoriasis?

Doesn't this mean they were paying in and not using any services, thus subsidizing ACA members who filed more claims? You know... how insurance is supposed to work? Fucking morons.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Dr Oz says the Trump administration will kick more than a million people off health insurance because some of them have "never filed a claim"

This will be part of holding on to the WH after the next election. The East Wing bunker, the drones on the roof, snipers on the arch, all the fencing and munitions around the WH... he's preparing. J6 was a trial run. He does not plan to leave

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Beyond parody: "At the strong request of the Military, and for National Security purposes, I have agreed to convert the magnificent Triumphal Arch, into a top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch, to house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large numbers of drones, plus Snipers..."

If Dems retake the House and Senate, impeaching these two should be high on the light of things to do. Investigate all those payments and gifts and grifts.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

"In the meantime, Thomas & Alito have ensured their ongoing relevance. If Ds retake Senate, Trump won’t be able to confirm a replacement, & no one will say another word about them retiring. The nation’s angriest grandpas can sit at One First Street & spit bile for 2 more years" — @lizdye.bsky.social

Fucking toddler having a fucking tantrum because he can't force himself onto the Kennedy Center. (I know, how rapey.) He's ruining DC completely.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

and there it is -- Trump says that if the Supreme Court doesn't allow him to put his name on the Kennedy Center then it will close down for good

FFS, we all know that Trump is freaking out about the AI warnings because he's heavily invested in AI, right? This is why we have rules about elected officials' investments - so we can trust that they're acting in OUR interests, not their own.

Does anyone actually believe this bullshit, aside from the nuttiest of the nutty? Really?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Tim Scott: "Think about how dangerous states like California [are] that want to take away your kids if you don't agree w/pronouns the schools chooses for your kids. They're coming for our culture. If you don't want to stand up & fight for the soul of this country, your wood is wet. It's that simple"

Why isn't this (and that weirdo cult video) on the front pages of every newspaper?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Please right your right hand. I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States. That loves us so much he can't even breath. That I will go out with my family, my friends, I'll do it any way - I don't care if I'm registered or not, I'm going to try to cheat like hell..."

My second gripe of the morning is that I'm really sick of the enshittification of absolutely everything in this AI/venture capital/internet-centered world.

I wish the NYT would stop trying to push Erika Kirk on me. What she learned about grief is that it's monetizable. It's a platform to promote herself.

Everything about this article makes me happy

If you want to look at the precursor to the MAHA cult, look back to the advocacy for DSHEA, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, which was passed in 1994. Advocates aired commercials starring Mel Gibson (!!) in which government agents confiscated people's vitamin C tablets.

View full thread

DSHEA allowed companies to sidle close to that line without having to submit any studies for approval. The could run afoul of the FTC, which requires substantiation for all claims in advertising, including well-controlled clinical studies, which were often lacking.

Neither agency has enough staff or funding to go after every unsubtantiated claim out there, and a lot of misinformation, as we know, spreads by word of mouth, Facebook groups, etc. DSHEA was the open door through which MAHA walked.

The aim was to allow quasi-medical claims to be made for dietary supplements and led to a surge of advertising for scammy supplements and vitamins and herbal products. A lot of the claims were of the "doctors and pharma don't want you to know this because they can't patent it!" variety

Little disclaimers were placed saying "not intended to diagnose or treat" whatever, even though the implication was just that. FDA has a stringent approval process for medicines, involving years of testing for clinical safety and effectiveness.

Ugh, he’s a total nut job

President Trump said he would nominate acting Navy secretary Hung Cao to the permanent position. Cao, a Vietnamese refugee and former commissioned Navy officer, became acting secretary in April after then-secretary John Phelan was ousted.

Retaliation presupposes that the US threw the first punch here, which it did. "I get to hit you! You don't get to hit me!"

Thing about working with famous epics is that they're famous epics for a reason. Tons of people have had opinions about them for millennia. If you're going to work with one, you know your version is going to piss some people off. Even a *sedate* famous epic inflames some of its audience.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not interested in re-making the Democratic Party to appeal to Republicans. Never-Trumpers can vote for Dems or not. Their opinions on "electability" mean nothing to me, especially looking at their track record.

See, the reason they call things "red flags" is because one of them is usually a sign that there is more bad stuff to be discovered. You act when the first one pops up (and a Nazi tattoo is a big one). You're not supposed to let them pile up for a while before you do something.

I used to walk my kids down there in strollers when they were babies, then they stopped in on their way home from middle school...Places like this are so very rare these days. They had Bates knitting needles, cast iron pans, coloring books and old games as well as hardware. Ayers, we'll miss you!

I have been in Northern Europe for the last week (Iceland, Faroe Islands, Scotland) and what’s become even more glaringly clear to me than ever is how badly the US has fucked itself (and the world) on renewable energy. Wind, solar, geothermal and other renewable sources are so prevalent here.

Yes! This puts into words what I have been thinking about all the discourse about boys and masculinity over the past few years. Instead of politicizing accommodating bad behavior, let’s fucking teach boys to be better people

/3 The common theme Is “I am unlikable, and rather than work on myself, society should adjust to make being unlikable an acceptable norm enforced by social sanctions against telling me I am unlikable.”

Finished this shawl and got photos today. It’s the Photography Shawl by AnimaKnits, in Brooklyn Tweed Shelter (RIP). I love how architectural this pattern is. It reminds me of an Art Deco-era skyscraper. #knitting #knitsky

To add to this - while my husband and I are doing well, I see a difficult world ahead for my kids and for other Americans, and that makes me pessimistic. Because not all of us view the world solely through the lens of our own personal well-being, but that of others as well.

Kate Starbird@katestarbird.bsky.social

How about this explanation… even for folks doing reasonably well in this strange economy, they can see the worst people in the world just raking in money in the ugliest of ways, and they know they’ll never be able to compete with that, and that their money will be worth less and less over time.

Sam Alito in Callais: the 14th/15th amendment only care about intentional discrimination! SCOTUS today: jk! not even that! (unless the “intentional” discrimination is attempting to comply with the voting rights act, in which case it’s unconstitutional intentional racial discrimination)

We've reached the point where one party has so obliterated the rule of law that everyone else continuing to abide by it will only hasten the end of our democracy. That's a recipe for chaos and violence. It's terrifying, and I don't know what we do about it.

Today's theme is Irish band movies featuring Maria Doyle Kennedy. Sing Street this afternoon, The Commitments this evening. This is my self-care activity.

I hope someone will ask him in one of these interviews about how the immediate result of Callais was for southern states to fall all over themselves to disenfranchise black people. The conservatives on the court may be over racism, but the country sure as hell isn't
