German mycologist, Julius Schäffer (1882-1944), is said to be the only modern mycologist to die from consuming poisonous mushrooms. You can view his collection of 82 coloured drawings of Russula, which we have digitised. ⬆️ Use our bio link to the 'Digitised Collections' to view this & many others.

The 26th of October 2026 marks 300 years since the publication of the first flora of Ireland by Caleb Threlkeld, Synopsis Stirpium Hibernicarum. We setup an exhibition in the herbarium to mark this milestone in plant recording for Ireland.

In fungi it's difficult to even create diagnosible genera, let alone families

Some good news for once:

Ramblers Scotland@ramblersscotland.bsky.social

📣 Coul Links is saved! We're hugely relieved that Scottish Ministers today turned down a bid to turn these globally-protected Highland dunes into an 18-hole golf course. Up to 7 holes would have crossed the John o' Groats Trail, and it would have permanently harmed the experience for walkers.

Just arrived in the post a fab new book on one of my favourite groups of fungi. Straightforward key, thorough accounts and lovely illustrations.. inspiration to track down the last few earthstars I’ve yet to see..

AI fungi are getting more realistic, but there's still something off about them and they have a tendency towards the over detailed / densely textured look

Honeybees are domesticated animals, not wildlife

Useful bit of work here - definitely accords with my observations, especially during hot, dry summers, where you can actually see honeybees dominating the remaining resource in areas with high hive density. I've had conversations with beekeepers about this, but haven't really seen a practice change.

This morning I found a puffball and have been unsuccessful in looking for a painting of one. Instead here is a painting of mushrooms (1927) by William Nicholson; his act of observation is a deep, mysterious and beautiful thing.

Portraits of Mushrooms by Alexander Viazmensky has loads of reproductions of his fantastic fungi paintings. It is annoying to buy in the UK as postage costs more than the book #MycoBookClub

Ernest and Alma Lorenzen were highly skilled potters with an unusual passion – mushrooms. Working from their studio in Lantz, Nova Scotia, the Lorenzens used local clay and minerals to fashion 235 different mushroom species during their lifetimes (Ernest died in 1990, Alma in 1998).
