I'm sitting on the conflict that I've seen come up a few times with friends who create, of the character in their head, the character on the page, and the character in all moments that occurred in between the 2, and why so often creators and readers clash.

In part. To different degrees. But i do wonder if there's something to be worked on there, the value in having, for lack of a better phrase, friends who you do not want to be part of your life, so they can give you the contrast. Readers who do not engage with fandom or the creation process.

The bucket of water of "oh wait is that what it *is* not what i wanted and believed it to *be*?" Yada yada, GRRM and gardening, being bold enough for characters to tell you you are wrong about them as a creator. Humility of recognizing the created and not the intended. This has gone on too long

The only version of the character that exists to the Creator is the one in motion, the one that has changed, the one that is more of a breathing living thing, that they themselves are in dialogue and self reflection to. They shape and are shaped by that process.

But we do not see it that way. We see the end state of that mutualism of existence, a snapshot, a single release version. And we don't treat characters as things grown out of and grown with this creator. We see them as singular people. And so any discussion or criticism is criticism of the creator

We paint in the margin space of all the choices we make, the things we aren't aware of ourselves. And those things are more readily apparent to the reader, the viewer. They are not bound up in the conception of the thing as it was meant to be, they see it as it is. Or at least, as it is for them

The other stumbling block in supplementary canon. The way you talk about characters in communities as it is created. All the apocrypha and headcanon and consensus built up. The ways a final work are different to the viewer seeing the end product, who hasn't been in a discord for years

This is, to be clear, an instance where neither party is wrong. The creator cannot see what the creation has become because they can never look on it with fresh eyes and see the thing as it is now. They know too much and hold on to all the interpretations/secrets unseen. They are parents to children

The thing that has resulted can and does get away from them, and that's a facet of creation and interpretation that fascinates me, the unintentionally of it, the way we put our blood into things and the things become of us, but we don't know ourselves, and thus we don't know our children.

We watch the play, from our seats of limited vantage, and we cannot see the wings, we cannot see the behind the scenes of production, we cannot see the writing and refining process. And so the end product becomes only what fresh eyes see, and they will not see the same thing

When all the notes are laid down, when all the words are written, people who haven't been part of the process will interpret it solely based on what they have, and a stumbling block I've seen happen is creators getting mad, because people take away radically divergent interpretations.

Because a character becomes who they are by the words that are written and available, or what the audience at large sees, and that's usually a radically different thing to what the creator imagines them to be. Because we see only a pinhole of the entire process and experience of them
