Here’s a shout out to the US Coast Guard! The US Coast Guard are risking their lives to rescue people in the Texas floods. Incredibly brave well-trained pilots, rescue swimmers! Thank you Coasties!

WSJ Greg IP: “…economic-policy uncertainty at levels seen in … 2001 terrorist attacks, the 2008-09 financial crisis and the onset of the Covid pandemic in 2020. Those were all driven by events beyond U.S. control. This one is man-made, and will wax and wane with that man’s word and actions.”

Ok. It’s cold everywhere in the US. It’s warmer in Boston (31F) than Dallas Texas (28F). But Hettinger North Dakota wins(?) at -45F. Not the wind chill but the actual temperature

J.P. Morgan econs on Trump’s latest are “increasingly concerned that the policy mix may tilt into an unintentionally far less business-friendly stance. The sustained 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico set to start this weekend is materially different than the tariff increases built into our baseline.”

AND SO IT BEGINS:“Trump Slaps Tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China in Opening Salvo of Trade War President Trump said he would impose 25% tariffs on nearly all imports from Canada and Mexico, a 10% tariff on energy products from Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on China, effective Tuesday.” —WSJ

I’ve been on this Blue Sky site for five minutes and already seen two incendiary posts bashing different parts of academia— from other academics! They were so difficult I felt I had to comment. If I wanted this, I’d hang out over on Elon’s channel.

I don’t understand the issue here. There are plenty of papers that contest the results of other papers. Most papers say “while XXX() and YYY() find this, we find that …” But journals have dropped notes and replies in favor of longer papers — probably due to impact factor pressures

In economics, editors, referees, and authors often behave as if a published paper should reflect some kind of authoritative consensus. As a result, valuable debate happens in secret, and the resulting paper is an opaque compromise with anonymous co-authors called referees. 1/

During the winter, as cold air moves over warm lake water, heat and moisture from below are transferred into the atmosphere, leading to the formation of clouds and precipitation. This process is commonly known as lake effect snow.

In the past month alone, over 12M people joined Bluesky, with daily active users growing 10x. We received more reports in two days than in all of last year, and have integrated new systems and quadrupled our moderation team to try and keep up. Sometimes, we have to work quickly to correct errors.
