Squid vibes: #DeepWonders science team encountered this cutie at 1,045 m. They marveled at the specialized cells in their skin, chromatophores — these tiny sacs that contain pigment. As a squid relaxes & contracts its muscles, it reveals or hides pigment for camouflage or communication.
Happy #MolluscMonday !
Our photo contest is over and we are working to find the winners🏆
Stay tuned for news on the audience award!

The squid on our plates may come from fisheries linked to illegal fishing.
Half of the 180 squid products analysed in our DNA study lacked key information, such as species and origin.
It's time for greater transparency in the EU seafood sector. #Vision2040 is an opportunity to deliver it.

Protecting bogs and peatlands is essential for fighting the climate crisis, and also for persevering the species of plants, animals, birds, insects and fungi that rely on them
Europe's bogs must be rewetted and rewilded!
This summer, wildfires tore through two of Europe’s most valuable peatlands: Belgium’s High Fens and England’s Great Fen. Peatlands are major carbon stores, but only while they stay wet.
25 years after bottom trawling ended, Chile's seamounts remain damaged. A single trawl can cause irreversible harm – prevention is the most effective strategy.
The @fao.org GFCM must learn from this lesson: extend the deep-sea trawl ban to at least 800m. #DefendTheDeepoceana.org/press-releas...
Cool new behavior caught on video!
This is a special type of octopus known as a #papernautilus (aka #argonaut) and her shell is a little less than 5cm. Watch as she extends and retracts her fleshy mantle - at the end, she rapidly retracts it all!

Marine biologists in Northeast Greenland used an ROV to observe, for the first time in the wild, a mature female bobtail squid (Rossia moelleri) and her egg masses. This Arctic species is present and reproducing even in subzero waters! 🧪

#MolluscMonday Small (<2 cm) glycymerid bivalve shell with characteristic taxodont dentition. Photographed on a building stone (almost certainly Oligocene Calcaire à astéries) in St Émilion, the famous centre for Bordeaux wine.

Ocean! 🐙🪸🐠🦐
The ocean is the largest living space on our planet, and yet we know comparatively little about its inhabitants. Here are some of the figures that are driving our species discovery mission at Ocean Census.

Many squid species have hooks on their arms, tentacles or both. These hooks are used to help grab and hold onto their prey. I definitely wouldn't want to be on the business end of one of these squid!
What's even more amazing is this adaptation shows up in several different squid families!

Happy Taxonomist Appreciation Day 🧬
It's a big day...Today we’re celebrating the scientists who make sense of life on Earth by discovering, naming, and classifying species.
Shout out to all the taxonomists in the Ocean Census Science Network. We're so proud to work alongside you.
Happy International Taxonomist Appreciation Day! 🌍🔬
