I think that Musk is really putting himself into a dangerous position here, both with Ukraine and Ukranians, and potentially with Putin.

Lora Kolodny@lorak.bsky.social

Musk said he restricted Starlink in Ukraine- causing fast moving drones to lose connectivity - and that he had every right to do so because of some terms of service or contract that he didn't show us. (He didn't address suddenly doing this with no warning to Kyiv.) www.cnbc.com/2026/10/24/u...

Never forget.

🧵🧵🧵 I was going to write a simple sentence about the madness of the moment, but I got distracted by the U.S. president’s complaint that he was screwed out of the Nobel Peace Prize after bombing multiple countries, and then he bolstered his case with a plan to execute a guy in a wheelchair and ...

My theory is that Elon is feeling his age, knows that he might be dead before he can send anything to Mars, and figures the Moon is now his best choice. I don't believe it is *all* a complete grift, though it's close...

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

Once again "there's aluminum" is not a strong argument for going to the Moon. If there were bars of gold on the Moon's surface, it would not be worth it to get them. Why don't these articles ever talk to an economist? Or just a boring person? fortune.com/2026/08/06/p...

God has the opportunity to make me believe.

As far as I can tell there’s still a thunderstorm expected to happen in the next couple of hours in Washington DC but Trump has decided that he must give his speech and so has told them to reopen the grounds so people can be outside in a thunderstorm during his speech.

"Investors"...

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

Trump and his sons ripped off nearly one million of their supporters and made a fortune producing nothing of value for anyone. Blood sucking leeches, using the US presidency to do it. And they couldn’t care less and their cult doesn’t seem to mind. Strange times in America.

My Theory of Trump is that he invites people to become part of his delusion/conspiracy/crimes without ever actually asking, doesn't really care that much if you do, but holds a grudge if you don't.

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

The reason people keep doing crimes for Trump is that you get rewarded for doing them, congratulations to Colorado's Dem governor for making sure we get more people trying to overturn elections on his behalf bsky.app/profile/kyle...

I can't really think that all these awful dudes are particularly happy with the guy who could have done it on day 1 of his term.

The whitewashing continues Justice Dept supports vacating the seditious conspiracy convictions from the U.S. Capitol siege An affront to victims and the juries who convicted the defendants (Those defendants received commutations, not pardons from Trump) www.cbsnews.com/news/doj-mov...

Trump will start saying, at some point, that Iran closed the strait first (if he hasn't already, I lose track) and everyone will be nodding, "yup, that's what happened".

Forbes@forbes.com

The Strait of Hormuz, which is used to transport 20% of the world’s oil, is still closed and Iran said Friday it forced at least three ships to turn back.

At some point, as ICE keeps expanding operations, I expect them to start abducting family and friends of other ICE employees. Not sure what happens then, but it'll be even more messed up.

More and more I think of LLMs as a very interesting form of lossy compression, so the propensity to hallucinate, or the need to build bigger models, doesn't seem surprising. Intelligent it is not.

All the people in the crowd are like "He's not talking about *my* 37 pencils, I need those."

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "You can give up certain products. You could give up pencils. Because under the China policy, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need 1 or 2. They don't need that many. You always need steel. You don't need 37 dolls for your daughter. 2 or 3 is nice. So we're doing things right."

This is so much bullshit. They are claiming that they have an up-to-date database of mugshots of every American, never mind how bad facial recognition software is.

I have the feeling that Johnson has been doing this bit since at least high-school.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: What's your reaction to yesterday's purge of senior ICE officials? When is it time for Congress to do some oversight? MIKE JOHNSON: I don't know any of the details of that yet. I just heard about that, literally I was walking in.

Wasn't expecting Stephen Miller to be presenting the best argument for homeschooling but here we are.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Stephen Miller: "Children will be taught to love America. Children will be taught to be patriots. Children will be taught civic values for schools that want federal taxpayer funding ... we're gonna make sure these funds are not being used to promote communist ideology."

Truthfully I'd be okay with this, mostly because of the great relief I'd feel at never paying attention to Facebook again.

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Meta's trial unveiled a tidbit: In 2022, Mark Zuckerberg floated the idea: Why don’t we delete everyone’s Facebook friends list and make them start over? Would Facebook feel cooler if you weren’t just hearing from a bunch of people you added 12 years ago and never talked to again? nyti.ms/4jstsv6

Sometimes I think that, if there are aliens out there evaluating humanity for membership in the galactic community, they are probably thinking "still way too stupid, and they might want to eat us".

All solvable problems, of course, just a simple matter of engineering. Bigger question is who is paying for this and why? I suspect that unless the US government isn't shoveling money into it, SpaceX is bankrupt pretty fast.

Malafect@malafect.bsky.social

They have yet to get one to orbit, never mind the number required to refuel one in orbit, never mind showing they can refuel one in orbit, never mind getting one to Mars, never mind actually landing one on Mars, etc. The addition of Optimus makes it *more* complicated, not less... sigh.

Musk just... makes up stuff and stock price goes up. For most people that's just fraud. Aspirational goals are all well and good but given that humans don't have any actual experience staying alive in interstellar space or on Mars, my expectation is that many people will die.

Happened to visit #Sunnylands in #PalmSprings yesterday, touring the main house, ending a trip to #ModernismWeek. One thought I had was: if we're going to have billionaires, make them more like the Annenbergs.

I'm surprised that it looks like something else happened here. I'm thinking Trump just doesn't gaf and is happy to have people kowtowwing to him. Laziest president ever. Musk et al are just looting. Oh well. US federal government basically nonfunctional now, and screwed for a generation

Malafect@malafect.bsky.social

I keep thinking that Musk is Trumps pet that he wants to show off, and I'm not sure what Musk really brings Trump, post election. Trump now seems to have more leverage over Musk via funding to SpaceX... does Trump really care about Mars? What happens to Musk when Trump sours on him?
