** Speaker announcement ** The first speaker of RustWeek 2027 is Esteban Kuber, member of the Rust Compiler Team, with 'Building Rust for Humans'! Info & Tickets: 2027.rustweek.org/talks/esteban/ PS Want to join Esteban in our line-up? The CfP is still open! #rustlang #RustWeek2027

At the tram stop just now, right next to some of the best bicycle infrastructure you'll ever see, an American tourist came to me to ask me if the Dutch government was doing anything about "this terrible bicycle problem" we have in the Netherlands. 🙃

He was really concerned to see so many bicycles everywhere. To his American brain, bicyclists were a terrible thing. He said he almost got hit by a bicyclist multiple times today. (Presumably by walking in the middle of the bicycle road. I don't know how else you manage to do that.) 🙃

Exactly one year ago I stepped down from my main responsibilities in the Rust project, because of burnout. Today, a year later, I employ about a dozen full-time Rust maintainers through Hexcat+RustNL. I'm not doing much technical work anymore, but this people stuff is also pretty fun and motivating.

I'm excited to find something new that gives me energy and motivation. Most likely, that new thing will have something to do with Rust, but I don't know yet what exactly that will be. Maybe teaching Rust, or writing another book, or solving #burnout in open source.. we'll see. :) 3/4

For a while my plan was actually to fully step down from my involvement in Rust at the end of the Rust All Hands this year, but I'm glad I didn't do that. I'm really happy I found something that feels energizing again rather than draining. Very curious to see where things will be in a year from now.

The liveable, inclusive, prosperous city isn’t a final destination, but a never-ending journey that continually seeks opportunities for improvement. That mindset—of continuous refinement rather than complacency—is what distinguishes great cities from good ones. Westeringsevest, Delft: 2015 vs 2026.

Imagine organizing a Rust conference and having zero women on stage. That's just embarrasing. oxidizeconf.com

We lowered the ticket prices for RustWeek! Individual tickets are now 199 instead of 249 euro. ✨ Additionally, we added a checkbox for an extra 100 euro discount, bringing the ticket price to just 99 euros for those who can't afford the full price. 💛

We did raise the price of the employer-paid tickets, but also added an option there for a significant discount for those who need it. 💛

Of course, maintenance involves many more things than producing and reviewing pull requests. These statistics don't capture many important types of contributions such as mentoring, discussions, meetings, and so on. But they are interesting numbers nonetheless.

If we weigh the pull requests by size (lines changed, capped at 2k) or by number of comments (on the GitHub thread), we get even higher numbers: roughly 40%.

I was asked recently about the cost of running a #rustlang conference and why the ticket prices are what they are. We figured we can just publicly share the numbers for RustWeek, in the name of #transparency. :) 1/9

Setting the ticket prices is very tricky, because you have to set them a year in advance, before any sponsors sign up. We only find out after the event if we ran at a loss or profit. This year, we made a very small profit, which we'll spend on our Rust Maintainers Team: rustnl.org/maintainers/ 8/9

Note that many other conferences also spend a lot of money on their website, customer support, event coordination, logistics, social media, recruiting sponsors, etc. We are able to do much of that ourselves, unpaid, which is a privilege that many other event organizers simply don't have. 9/9

Those are roughly 250 corporate tickets (~410 euro after tax), 300 individual tickets (~190 euro after tax), and 100 student tickets (~30 euro after tax). Accounting for the various discounts (early bird, discount codes, etc.) and overhead, this leaves us with roughly 140k. 6/9

Those student tickets are sold at a significant loss, but it's very important to us to not just run this conference for those with a well paid job. 7/9

This adds up to roughly € 280k for just the two conference days. (The total for all of RustWeek is ~€ 400k.) The money we get from sponsors covers roughly half of the costs. The other half has to be covered by tickets. 4/9

We are currently the biggest Rust conference with 850+ attendees. We give free tickets to all the speakers and volunteers, which is almost a hundred people total. The sponsor packages also include a total of roughly 100 tickets. That leaves ~650 sold tickets. 5/9

RustWeek has many subevents (conference, hackathon, unconference, workshops, Rust All Hands, etc.), but I've tried to extract just the two day conference part of RustWeek 2026: 2/9

Venue rent: € ~50k Lunch, snacks, drinks, catering services: € ~130k A/V services: € ~30k Stuff we set up at the venue: € ~20k Travel compenstation for speakers: € ~10k External services: € ~25k (accounting, registration & payment, event management, insurance, etc.) Miscelaneous: € ~15k 3/9
