🚨 New investigation just dropped 🚨 For years, tainted Venezuelan gold reached one of the most prestigious Swiss refineries. Clear red flags didn’t prevent more than 70t of gold, valued at $2.2B, to enter the global markets via the front door. 🧵1/5

Descendents incredibly tight, almost no intermissions, great set. I was hoping in Statue of Liberty given the location but nope. Much more pit and stagediving than I expected. ‘Merican sent people wild

SxDx better than what I feared due to Mike’s voice. He was visibly enjoying it, he likes the new songs and for good reasons. Weird to hear Ring of Fire so early (2nd song) but Don’t Drag Me Down is an amazing closure. The Way Things Were after Creeps+Mommy’s Little Monster was chef’s kiss.

Living within walking distance of a public pool in NYC is one of the great perks of my neighborhood. Unfortunately since I moved here (2021), lifeguard shortages made lap swimming tricky. Glad to see things are finally back to normal.

Social Distortion’s new album, Born to Kill, sounds like it was made by a band in their 40s, not their 60s (except maybe one song). The title track is a banger, and there are two or three other hidden gems. Looking forward to seeing them with the Descendents in Brooklyn this September.

In January, a phishing message arrived on my Signal account, supposedly from "Signal Support." I was able to turned the tables on the attackers and get a unique view of the wide-scale campaign by the attacker's targeting journalists and politicians I was target #13,730 in their database.

What kind of country just blows vessels out of the water, without any sort of due process for the people in those boats? I don't know if people appreciate how outrageous that is.

Marco Rubio: "Right now you have a country who is unlawfully, criminally, and illegally taking possession of an International waterway and blowing up commercial vessels. I don't know if people appreciate how outrageous this is."

6/ What stood out most in this work wasn’t only the scale (a multi-billion dollar market tied to environmental destruction, human rights abuses, and criminal finance), but how normalized and under-scrutinized these mechanisms are.

7/ So the question becomes: is the system failing to control tainted gold, or is it working exactly as designed, by making “clean” and “dirty” gold indistinguishable in practice?

4/ Once gold is certified as “legal” on paper, the entire downstream chain treats it as compliant. Very few actors question it further. Plausible deniability is built into the system as everyone can point to documents, certifications, or standards.

5/ Borders add another layer of opacity. By the time gold reaches market, its origin are effectively rewritten. To the buyers' eyes, the precious metal is “made in the U.S.” or “made in Switzerland.”

3/ What emerges is not just a set of isolated loopholes, but a decades-long systemic failure: • Controls rely heavily on paperwork that can be forged or recycled • Traces of illegal mining (like mercury) can be removed • Gold is quickly relabeled and “cleaned” through a few transactions

I’m noticing more people, esp Gen Z, using analog devices like film cameras and Walkmans. It’s still rare, but definitely more common than it was three years ago. Is it just me?

“It’s a country with no gold of its own—yet until recently, Switzerland refined nearly 70% of the world’s gold. That share may have dropped to around 50%, but it remains the global hub for gold refining. That alone raises serious questions.”

In this interview released to @occrp.org, Mark Pieth, one of the leading experts on illicit gold flows, answers five questions about an investigation I spent nearly a year on. It traces a multibillion-dollar opaque gold trade #Venezuela, #Curaçao, and #Switzerland. www.occrp.org/en/feature/f...

Gold was moved under the label of “gold scrap”, hence differentiating it from the highly problematic Venezuelan mining sector. The refinery said its own laboratory tests confirmed this. But a sample of data we independently obtained seems to contradict this claim 🧵4/5

Leaked documents show how the gold was moved by a broker in Curacao, who received it from Venezuela and shipped it to Europe. When it reached Swiss customs, the Country of Origin was the Caribbean island, despite the absence of mines or enough pawn shops to justify those volumes. 🧵2/5

The gold was sourced in Venezuela, where the suppliers would use it to switch bolivares into dollars. Among them, an individual currently on trial in Brazil for trafficking Venezuelan gold and another who admitted of running an illegal currency exchange scheme through gold. 🧵3/5
