KCL repeatedly advertising "theology and the arts" positions when what they always mean is "theology and painting" is really getting annoying now

Lessons learnt travelling by train/ferry to Helsinki. 1. Absolutely trust the punctuality of the ferries to the nearest 10 minutes 2. Don’t trust any train to cross the German border within 4 hours of the advertised time

it's so weird that google groups send the new member approval emails in the language of the member wanting to be admitted and not in the language of the person who is reading the email and has to approve it

One of the oddest things I do for my work is to walk 40 minutes into town to download a PDF because the licensing agreement only allows me to take it home if I do it that way

University job portals have some really odd distinctions. What's the different between an academic job and a research job at a university? Or between a "job opening" a "job opening around our campus" and a "professorship" which logically would seem neither to be a job or on campus?

This feels horribly tone deaf careers newsletter advice from Oxford. "Stop looking at the way universities are slashing positions, my son in law just got a permanent job, so probably that's how things are"

Frustrating how no-one ever cites the publications that would boost my h-index. I just want one or two more citations of a couple of the less-popular articles... it can't be that hard.

Absolutely surreal to have lived through the Napster days and watched as the titans of industry moved hell and high water to lock down any possible chance that someone's song might get swapped online without giving the studios a cut and now those same people are just like "well we gotta steal music"
