Genuinely sad that this is the end state of this sort of community - the biggest no-lifers imaginable constantly celebrating because a game's CCU is low. There's one dude there who posts like 200 times a day doing CCU grave dancing.

Saiko@elsaiko.cl

now that resetera is down who's gonna inform us about the CCU of launch games

So funny that they made a separate forum for CCU threads and my thought was "oh they're putting these off in a closet somewhere because they annoying", but the CCU threads appear in that separate forum but also in the main forum! The admins consider CCU threads the most important threads.

Importantly, Yglesias believes that, once Democrats win, they *still* shouldn't do anything, because that will jeopardize their chance to win *again.* This is a common belief among these Dem centrists types: we have to win because the other guys are evil but opposing evil is a losing strategy.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

It's worse than being infiltrated by like....paid CIA operatives or whatever. They are infiltrated by people who wreck just for the love of the game, purely out of ego. The kind of person who thinks 45 minutes of a 1-hour meeting should be about their dumb bullshit.

nathaniel@pedrothedagger.bsky.social

i don't actually think most of these groups are actually getting infiltrated or whatever but you probably should not structure your volunteer org to be maximally vulnerable to the simple sabotage field manual, as a suggestion

One of the (few) good parts of having a computer that is getting old and slow is I can find timing bugs other people can't find, due to changes in loading order etc. Is what I tell myself as I look at RAM prices.

Fun fact: Matt Darling's main policy area is pushing to make it easier for corporations to lay people off, because he thinks that laying people off is too difficult for American corporations. Including, specifically, American video game companies. Who according to him hate doing layoffs!

nickvern.bsky.social@nickvern.bsky.social

Matt do you agree with the goals of the searchlight institute to make the dem party more conservative? If not why’d you join?

This is what prompted me to write about Mixtape - so much of the criticism amounted to "the wrong kind of person likes this." Where the wrong kind of person wasn't even a bad person just...white, a hipster, a millennial, etc. (I won't call that criticism dogshit but it was "left wanting"...)

doctober@docseuss.bsky.social

sometimes you just read some dogshit criticism that gives you the sense the person writing it isn't really criticizing the game so much as the audience they imagine the game to have. It's working backwards from "who likes it" to come to a conclusion

"My iced coffee got warm on the way home, I'll stick it in the freezer and, unlike last time, remember to take it out." "It's frozen solid - I'll put it on the counter. Unlike last time, I'll remember to fetch it." "It's room temperature, back to the freezer." - Modern Sisyphus (me)

This is similar to the "rationalists" who believe AI will kill all humans. If they genuinely believe that they should be working frantically to kill all AI researches - that would be the rational response. Instead they just send tweets and write snarky blogs. It's pure LARP.

Eric Ravenscraft@lordravenscraft.bsky.social

I don't know how precisely to articulate this but...there is a level to which people are simply LARPing stuff, and I feel like we could solve a lot of problems and make other problems easier to deal with if we could simply switch off the LARP and deal with things as they are

Rationalists are concerned not only with current humans but future humans. This is the world's easiest trolley problem: on one track is quadrillions of humans, and on the other track is like 10,000 computer guys.

Instant pivot from "how dare you accuse of us making up news" to "yeah we made it up, so what?" "Proved controversial." Yes - it is in fact "controversial" when journalists make up news stories! This is "well we started a conversation!" (based on something we made up wholesale)

Ok correction - the story they planted was the one about schools giving out pro-furry homework (or something), which dovetailed with the litterboxes story. Now that said, Jesse's writeup incudes the following: "After all, who doesn’t long for the chance to debunk their own hoax?"

James Margaris@markymarg2.bsky.social

This is a good time to remind people that Jesse had his podcast producer "break" - aka entirely make up - a story about furry kids using litterboxes in public schools, which morphed into a story about trans kids using litterboxes at schools, for podcast "content."

His own website freely admits that the story they are "debunking" is a "hoax" - their own words - that *they* perpetrated as journalists. I misremembered the details of the hoax - that's on me! (I don't think the details of the made up news story really matter though...)

This is all extremely well-documented. The only question here is if Jesse knew about this hoax in advance or if his podcast producer went behind his back. But that producer wasn't fired or even reprimanded, and the hoax was made into podcast "content" so hmm....

James Margaris@markymarg2.bsky.social

YOU STARTED THE RUMOR. Your podcast producer wrote about this AT LENGTH and you did an episode about how YOU planted this story. You want credit for debunking a hoax that YOU perpetrated? Be serious.

At the very least Jesse's podcast producer totally fabricated a news story and Jesse *rewarded* him by having him speak about it on the podcast and turning it into "content." And that's if you believe the producer went behind his back - which I personally don't, for obvious reasons!

"people constantly make shit up on social media" Yes, for example you made up a story about furry kids in schools and you proudly crowed about it how it was a great prank. (That, in a shocking coincidence, advanced your anti-trans agenda)

One of the episodes was 112. They claim that they planted the story as a sort of Sokal test. So Jesse, who is obsessed with what he thinks are outrageous identity issues among kids, made up a story about outrageous identity issues among kids, but as some sort of double-reverse psychology? Lol.

This post is unavailable.

Which of these is more plausible? People obsessed with making kids and schools look bad over identity issues made up a fake cringe identity issues story to a) make kids and schools look bad or b) as a double-reverse psychology thing to own the conservatives they agree with? Come on now.

The thing that's weird about "you don't like new ideas" here is that the game feels like an average of 20 other modern indie Metroidvania games. What are the new ideas?

Mike Minotti@tolkoto.com

Really feeling the “oh you like pancakes, so you hate waffles/dat is a whole new sentence” vibe when I say I wish Belmont’s Curse demo felt more like Castlevania and people act like I’m some sort of old gaming traditionalist who could never possibly accept change or new ideas.

Bill Grueskin@bgrueskin.bsky.social

If you push out a rumor that turns out to be 100% bullshit, you didn't "break a story."

One of the fascinating aspects of the people who have gone berserk over AI is that AI - which they claim to put their full faith in - regularly contradicts them on their world view and on their claims about AI capabilities.

That second screenshot got me instantly blocked by a guy who was ranting about how anyone who doesn't love AI is a fascist who needs to be crushed. The guy is waging a holy war against "antis" in favor of AI - but AI thinks his war is silly. Many such cases.

I think it's weird that 3 months ago you were a normal person and now your entire life revolves entirely around a holy war you imagine you're in with "antis." Nobody is even fighting against you, your tweets get zero or one replies lol. It's all from reading Reddit or whatever.

"People who say they don't like AI are fascists!" Here's an idea: open an AI chatbot (lol) and ask it what "fascism" is and is not. And if saying you dislike a thing - with no enforcement power whatsoever - qualifies. I'm not joking just go do that right now and report back!

Bob: "AI is amazing, already a super-intelligence that outperforms humans." Fred: "AI says a main pillar of your world view is misguided." Bob: "AI is amazing, already a super-intelligence that outperforms humans - except on this one topic I guess!" Come on man...

Here's a question: are people personally attacking you, or are they just sharing their own opinion like "I don't like AI"? If it's the latter - that's not someone waging war with you, it's just a person disliking a thing. Pretty normal!

Small self-plug, I wrote about a related topic recently here: jmargaris.substack.com/p/a-plea-for... Carrie is more an issue of authentic action than dialogue, but same principle: ask "what would this character do?" without adding "in a CW show"

jmargaris.substack.comA Plea for More Authentic Dialogue“Marvel dialogue” is a symptom, not the issue

What makes the movie is she's sympathetic until you get to that scene and it turns into Shit's Complicated (tm) rather than straightforward revenge. It's, for lack of a better term, very "real." How a person might actually behave, not how a sympathetic girlboss would girlboss it up.

Crazy that this series is devoted to missing the point of the original and balking on the single most interesting aspect of it. I watched the movie in I dunno...the 90s? And I still remember Carrie losing it and murdering even the people who were nice to her. That *makes* the movie!

What if I'm polite very sarcastically, like "great job lil buddy" or "this is totally wrong but great effort" or "thank u king for this sadly incorrect information"? I'm not saying I talk to LLMs this way. But, just theoretically, if I did....

Sarah Z@sarahz.bsky.social

I don't think LLMs are conscious but I do think (and I don't know if there have been studies on this or if this has been verified, it is just something I think is likely) people who regularly use LLMs and also frequently behave extremely abusively to LLMs are more likely to be dicks to humans too

This is what I've been talking about with regards to romantasy readers and how their attitude is becoming widespread. All "content" is becoming kink/fetish porn where people know exactly what they want and demand work that, while low quality, checks every box.

Bugs 🔜 MC Atlanta@bugsmaytrix.bsky.social

maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

Porn chatbots and such make sense as a product because people have very specific wants and don't care if the quality is bad. But I think it's very bad that people use that same approach with all fiction writing, TV, video games, etc. This dovetails with AI but I don't think it's an AI issue exactly.

If your attitude is "I want a story where a boy wizard is kidnapped by a sexy Monster Girl and then falls in love with the monster girl and and they team up to blah blah blah..." then AI makes a lot of sense because AI can give you that. But the problem there is less AI than that attitude IMO.

Do not let this person find out about the roguelite-like-lite I'm making, his head will explode. (It's a lite version of a game that's like a lite version of rogue - pretty self-explanatory really)

Phil Hornshaw@philhornshaw.com

I really dislike that we've allowed "roguelike" and "roguelite" to be separate terms we use regularly.

I do find it funny that after 15 years of telling people that all modern hardware is super duper fast if you just git gud at programming and code to da metal that Order of the Sinking Star runs poorly on Switch 2. "Everyone is bad at programming except - oops I mean including - myself!"

It's very easy to write "modern computers are super fast but a webpage still takes 3 seconds to load because it's got 100,000 lines of pointless Javascript libraries - just don't do that!" People (people on reddit programming subs) eat that kind of thing up.

I'm really baffled by the people who see someone's youtube subs drop from 1.5 million to a paltry 1.48 million and are prompted to write an essay like "and yet you say you believe in prison abolition? Haven't we learned anything about draconian punishments?" Like...did you get lost?

AdequateEmily@adequateemily.bsky.social

Its weird that "you don't get to be famous anymore" is seen the same as "life in prison." Like man, you can do art without being famous. You won't make the same money or acclaim, but also...you fucked up bad, there should be some ceiling for trust to make sure you can't abuse that power further.

For some people this is a launching pad to bring up The Gripe of How People Who Support Prison Abolition are Sometimes Incoherent About Sex Crimes, which is maybe a valid gripe but has absolutely nothing to do with anything happening here. Total non-sequitur.

Not wrong but it's not like today where a PS5 and Series are 95% the same hardware and you can just compare clock speeds. The PS2 was better than the XBox in a few ways - massively higher fill rate, faster float ops, etc. Bit more apples to oranges.

Jeff Grubb@grubb.wtf

There are caveats because of the capacity of the GameCube's discs, but it's widely known that it and the Xbox were noticeably more powerful than the PS2, right?
