How to mess things up with your users, or another edition of #FixTheForms—this time with @deutschebahn.com. The form asks users to use a dot as the decimal symbol. When they do, it shows an error telling them to do it exactly like this. To progress, despite the error message, a comma is required.

Haven’t got around writing #weeknotes lately, but if you want a glimpse into what I was up to regarding #openRoadmaps take a look at Martins ⬇️ 🙏

As a public servant, I write weekly notes to let people see what I do. I returned after almost 3 weeks of vacation. I co-delivered an all-hands input on open #roadmaps. I also worked on the related blog post and wrote an upcoming conference talk. Plus, I got grumpy with badly named services.

Belated, from last week, when I was still on annual leave: here is weeknote 233 – because, as a public servant, I write weekly notes to let people see what I do. I did not work. But while in Singapore, I met with my colleague Hefen to discuss setup, challenges, and retaining skills in the age of AI

Just watched the movie #Digger. It’s well worth a watch. With a clever twist, it addresses the #climateGrief that future generations will face. It’s a satire, as the trailer suggests, but also not. It reaches you. It felt weird to step out of the cinema, as if I’d stepped out of a time machine.

I had stopped reading Sian Cain’s review on @theguardian.com after the first 3 paragraphs. Now, I read it in full and agree: “Iñárritu’s film is the best fictional work about the climate crisis that I have seen yet, because it is also about the inability of art to speak to this moment truthfully.”

theguardian.comTom Cruise’s Digger has flopped spectacularly – but I think it is a misunderstood masterpieceThis article contains spoilers for Digger: Alejandro G Iñárritu’s film may be about to become one of the biggest bombs Hollywood has ever seen – but it is destined to be re-evaluated with time

If you’re a lead or head working on a digital service, you’re going to be held to account by more than GDS’s guidance. And it doesn’t all live in the same place. My favourite governance nerd, Oli Lovell, has pulled together a compass. Have a peek. publicdigital-delivery-compass.netlify.app/trial/

Queuing rules have fascinated me for a while. In Hong Kong 🇭🇰, pathways mark where bus riders and underground passengers should queue. In contrast, in Buenos Aires 🇦🇷, a strict single line forms based on passenger arrival. In Germany 🇩🇪, people randomly stand around the bus stop.

A very different way to have a government body engage with the public: GIC, formerly called the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation, its sovereign wealth fund, created an interactive exhibition to help people understand and experience its organisation’s purpose, challenges and approaches

As a public servant, I write weekly notes to let people see what I do. I was on annual leave last week and experienced Disneyland’s impressive end-to-end service. Then I wondered what would happen if we applied Disney’s approaches to public services. I also used forms from different countries.

Yet another government form that needs fixing: Applying for a Malaysia digital arrival card makes the user navigate another calendar to enter the date of birth. Also, the form doesn’t allow copy-pasting, making it difficult for users with dyslexia or dyscalculia.

Those who want to can use a calendar to select their date of birth, but by default you type it into a separate 3-segment form field, which makes sense. Also, it allows you to choose male, female, and other as options for sex. Malaysia’s form only contains 2 options.

If you travel as a family or group, adding more people is an option, which saves plenty of time. You don’t have to re-enter all travel information for each person when you all travel on the same means of transportation. The people who designed this form consciously considered use cases.

Now, this is a very different experience: Singapore’s Arrival Card form is straightforward. It doesn’t use a one-thing-per-page structure, but it still has clear labels and well-designed form fields. The ‘autofill with passport’ option opens the camera and neatly extracts all information. 👏🏻

One of my favourites of recent years is ‘BZSt IBAN+‘. That are 2 acronyms in a row in an app’s name. The literal translation would be: ‘Federal Tax Office International Bank Account Number plus’. 😞 A plain-language name following the guidance would be ‘Share bank details with the tax office’.

Swiftly over to King’s Cross station for the last regular train up to Edinburgh. I missed my original LNER connection and had to purchase a new LUMO train ticket for another £35. The last leg of the #CrossBorderRail journey tonight takes a bit over 4 hours to Waverley station.

17 hours after leaving Berlin, I’ve reached my destination, Edinburgh Waverley. My biological clock is already 1 hour later. So I’m just gonna crash. Choosing #CrossBorderRail over an aeroplane reduced my CO2 emissions by about 3/4.

Made it to Brussels after a delay of almost 2.5 hours—time to relax at the #Eurostar lounge now. Trusting Eurostar and its timings, I usually book myself a Lumo train up to Edinburgh, the last regular train out of London. I really hope I can catch that. #CrossBorderRail

London calling! Eurostar ran very smoothly — as (almost) always. And international arrivals is fast as always—even enough time for buying snacks at St Pancras station. I’m now 12.5 hours into my #CrossBorderRail journey for today.

Change in Cologne, unfortunately, with a 101-minute delay. Despite my 2 buffers of 90 mins each, I will miss my planned Eurostar in Brussels and LNER connection in London. I hope I can catch the final regular evening connection to Edinburgh, but that will require a new ticket. #CrossBorderRail

Update a month later: 1 of the 3 blog posts is out – on how we are putting our values into practice in #design and #userResearch. Next is the one on open roadmaps, where @beliebig.eu has already done a lot of work. I’ll pick it up next week. So we can publish it towards the end of the month.

Public accountability post again 👀 I currently have 3 blog posts in the making: 1. On open roadmaps and how they create transparency in service development 2. From 1 to 51: how we grew the design & user research discipline 3. Putting values into practice—in the design & user research discipline

Many organisations write down their values. But not all take them seriously. At @digitalservice.bund.de, we live by them. So, 6 designers and user researchers wrote down how their values guide decisions and shape their daily work. We assembled these personal reports in a blog post – in German 🇩🇪
