Daniel Sickles was born #otd in 1819. While not a West Point graduate, he rose to the rank of major general and commanded a corps in the Army of the Potomac during the war, his controversial actions at Gettysburg eventually earning him the Medal of Honor. He died in 1914 at 94.

St. Brown

Erik Loomis@erikloomis.bsky.social

This Day in Labor History: October 16, 1859. John Brown and a group of followers invade the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today WV) to start a war and end slavery. Let's talk about this key moment in American labor history!

Have to be clear just how dangerous this is. If it continues, it effectively removes constitutional rights from an entire class of people. Imagine you had to fear that if you criticize the regime, any error on paperwork filled out by your family decades ago could be used to strip your citizenship.

KRISTI NOEM: I'm confident Ilhan Omar will finally be held accountable for her crimes? BENNY JOHNSON: What are those crimes? NOEM: When people apply to come to this country, if you go back and find that anything could be wrong or misrepresented, that's when it voids or cancels their citizenship

Our only reply to this can be that we must defeat the fascists and we will never give in.

oh sweet, i was wondering when they were gonna bring back the trans-atlantic slave trade.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

Whoa. @haleaziz.bsky.social has the scoop on a truly insane plan to use some military training ships for deportations, with people presumably shackled or locked in cells for days at a time as they transit to Central and South America. Each journey would be staggeringly expensive — and dangerous.

If this story is true that's two GOP house members (Smith and Boebert) and a former Senator/cabinet secretary we've learned about just this week. Ordinarily we wouldn't care about these folks' private lives, but if the party is openly hostile to LGBTQ+ rights I think the hypocrisy is newsworthy.

When a politician dies we see a lot of hagiographies about them. If you mention they were a terrible person IRL, you get chastised. My feeling? If you don't want people to talk shit about you after you die, don't be shitty when you're alive.
