"Short Circuiting. Sabotage on Your Day Off" – Fascinating material from 1981 by a Dutch anti-nuclear "resistance group" named after Gyro Gearloose: "Willy Wortel en de Lampjes."

Electricity is 23% of global final energy but delivers 37% of useful energy and powers 46% of the global economy. We don't need to replace every fossil joule. We need to replace the services. A much smaller task. Great to see the @iea.org’s new Electrification report finally measure this.

Finding odd coincidences while scanning old newspapers: As Dutch parliament prepares to debate key new energy policies in October '74, a newly-built offshore ship rams into a key railway bridge near Amsterdam, hastening the bridge's replacement by a tunnel in '79.

The proposed construction of three new nuclear stations was at the heart of the parliamentary debate. Meanwhile the development of North Sea oil fields was in full swing.

Heading into a rapidly warming future with substantially less research to tell us how the planet is changing. This takes denial to a whole new level.

NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%. 80%! A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

I'm writing a thing about history education and "AI". Myself and another came up with some 'considerations' and I was wondering what people make of them in their current form. All critique appreciated, I'm trying to get to durable and defensible positions.

Among the terrible fires raging across Europe at the moment: the raised bogs of the Hautes Fagnes (or Hoge Venen) have been ravaged by one of the largest fires in Belgian history.

The Hautes Fagnes is one of the larger reserves in the Low Countries. I remember hiking around the area seven years ago, when, during a cold spell, the bogs were covered in snow and mist.

Heroic nautilus of the centre of the title page of this edition of Johann Jakob Scheuchzer's Herbarium Diluvianum. One of the all-time great book titles, that. In fact there's nothing about this I don't like.

You can get to a high-warming world without high emissions . That's the part of this week's "RCP 8.5 is implausible" discussion that's getting missed. A short thread on why the relief is premature 🧵

Fascinating. One day, I’ll be a historian of peat and peatlands.

Global peatland experts share their top 50 research needs. Many of these are obvious (better mapping) and many should be obvious (centre local and indigenous communities), but some might surprise you (there is a lot that we do not know about what the microbes in peat are up to).

This is a critical point: *today*, even in countries that don’t introduce policies & measures to support it, consumers can unilaterally enact electrification and demand destruction

This is the first oil crisis in which alternatives to oil and gas — solar panels, EVs, batteries, induction stoves heatpumps — are cheap and easy to get. These flying off the shelves already... This has reporting from 10 countries www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

The Old Oil Order is collapsing. Strait of Ormus, Baltic Sea, Red Sea are its geographical knots, and they are bursting. Hyper-concentration, petro-aggression, and transit-obsession are the structural festures. Climate and wars will make survival of this oil-based order plainly unsustainable

In March 1651, a dike breach wreaked havoc just outside the walls of Amsterdam, inundating a whole polder. The damage was so spectacular that artists flocked to the site, documenting the disaster and its aftermath in sketches, oil paintings, and engravings. These by J. Asselijn and W. Schellinks 1/

The floods also offered an analogy for the Amsterdam patrician, scholar, and insanely wealthy collector Nicolaes Witsen to conjecture about the geohistorical processes that shaped the landscape of Holland, depositing the sand, clay, and peat strata that made up the subsoil around his home town. 5/

Jan van Goyen and Roeland Roghman depicted the aftermath, showing the extent of the damage and the labor required to undo it. Especially Roghman's 4-part engraving is fascinating! 2/

The #AMOC by 2100 will thus be so weak (~8 Sv) that it is very likely on the way to full shutdown, as our study last year showed: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... In my view, this now makes a full #AMOC shutdown more likely than not. Definitely not a low likelihood risk, as we used to think.

Vacancy for a three-year post-doc position at the Universiteit van Amsterdam! This postdoc position, part of the European Research Council (ERC)-sponsored 𝐁𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐊𝐀𝐃𝐄 project, seeks to understand the long legacies of blockades on the post-war order.

Sounds like the stuff of an 18th-century luna-theological argument for the existence of a divine architect.

something that wrinkles my brain every time I remember it is the fact that total eclipses are only possible on earth because the moon and sun appear to be the same size in our sky, due to the insanely, astronomically unlikely fluke that the moon is 400x smaller than the sun but 400x closer to us.
