I'm trying to shop for a shirt online and it's like the models are stupidly handsome, I know they're trying to trick me into thinking I'll look like that. Not gonna work.

One of my core use-case for LLMs is investment research. I'm investing in Japanese equities. 3,800+ listed companies, most with zero sell-side coverage. The filings exist in Japanese, in a format almost nobody parses. I open-sourced the research system patterns I use. Demo + repo below.

How were all these early bitcoin aficionados so terrible at encrypting their emails? I'm glad they were, but did they not read Cryptonomicon?

Returning from a visit to view Lee's armies in spring 1864, Lincoln's party passed a brigade of black soldiers, who came "screaming, yelling, shouting: 'Hurrah for the Liberator; Hurrah for the President.'" Lincoln was moved to tears, "his voice so broken by emotion that he could hardly reply".

ETFs and passive investing need an overhaul. "Congrats on your diversified portfolio!" = "You're now funding companies run by people you'd cross the street to avoid." As it turns out, "broad market exposure" meant bankrolling a lot of absolute ghouls and corporate sycophants.

Speaking Tues 5/27 12pm at Japan Innovation Campus, Palo Alto about EDINET API Tools - my open-source project for Japanese financial data. EDINET = Japan's SEC EDGAR. My Python/LLM tools make this data accessible, combining my Tokyo finance background with building cool stuff. Come hang out! 😅

Seems like CFPB uniquely vulnerable among federal agencies? Single-director agency affected by Seila Law (2020), lacks structural independence protections that shield multi-member commissions like the FTC and SEC. Most Americans can't afford financial/legal advice; they need CFPB protection.

No Tesla dealership nearby? You can still make a difference! Volunteer to phonebank tomorrow for @joshweil.bsky.social. I did this for the 1st time Fri. Ask each voter to bring 2-3 friends to the polls - this multiplies your impact! One conversation can inspire many votes. Your voice matters.

Last week I shared ETF-it, my Python tool to decompose ETF holdings. I got feedback that viewing the actual voting records of Vanguard’s fund managers would be helpful. I've dug deeper and the findings are eye-opening. I analyzed Vanguard's voting patterns for #Tesla, and here's what I uncovered:

Since 2022 Vanguard voted against shareholder proposals 78% of the time Their votes opposed Tesla management less than 10% of the time In 2024, they even voted against enhanced reporting on workplace harassment and discrimination (DEI measure)

Vanguard's votes overwhelmingly align with Tesla's mgmt on societal issues. This raises serious questions about shareholder rights and governance in the ~ $10T ETF industry. Investors deserve voting transparency. ETF managers need to be more supportive of shareholder proxy voting. Let us vote!

Unilaterally shutting down USAID via Executive Order and merging it with State is openly illegal and Dems should immediately converge on D.C. and call for protests if Trump tries to do it.

Today's progress: Standardized key Income Statement and Balance Sheet metrics from Japanese corporate filings. Making JP market data accessible to global investors. Let's connect if you need help with Japanese market data. #FinTech

My goal is to break down language barriers and provide deep, AI-assisted analysis of Japanese corporate disclosures. This isn't for real-time trading, but rather for thorough, strategic research and understanding of the Japanese market.

My app now parses Japanese semi-annual reports, extracting key financial data and management commentary. Next up: Extraordinary Reports for major corporate changes. Making Japanese market research accessible and insightful is the goal. 📊🤖

ETF industry is approaching $10T USD in assets under management. 75% controlled by three behemoths. ETFs are convenient but we sacrifice voting right as shareholders, relying on fund mgr to act in our best interest. yea right.. Get back to oversight and voting as a shareholder in a business.

If you enjoy the convenience of ETFs, but you're concerned about your retirement funds lining the pockets of junior oligarchs, say "ETF-it!". My new tool lets you peak under the hood of Vanguard ETFs, turning your set-it and forget-it strategy into "I own what???" github.com/matthelmer/e...
