Normalise emailing people to say you read and enjoyed their work. Academia can be a bleak conveyorbelt of endless negative feedback. Sometimes it's hard to know whether anyone values your work. That's why it means so much when someone takes the time to message and say so! Be that person.

I am ashamed to say I burst out laughing at this quote: "Well, my wife says that I’m emotionally dead, but I’m not." Go read the whole interview, it's humbling.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

If nothing else, two fun facts you might not already know: (1) The Tragedy of The Commons is a specific, essentially wrong paper by a guy who turns out to suck, and (2) exploitative scholarly publishing is basically traceable to one guy, Robert Maxwell, father of Ghislaine.

I read it this morning, it's a good read - I suggest other academics read it and look at the concept of "enclosure", I'd not heard of that before. I also appreciate the last paragraph in the Acknowledgements :)

Peter K. G. Williams@pkgw.bsky.social

Likely the most important thing I've ever written — if you're an academic and the AI mania unsettles you, here's my best shot at presenting some intellectual tools that might help you articulate why. arxiv.org/abs/2610.27251

I'd forgotten that aspect... and yet they will still want the validation from real scientists.

David Kipping@davidkipping.bsky.social

I think this is the tip of the iceberg and somewhat existential. There’s a ton of bros who think we don’t need scientists and would love nothing more to show that they’re unnecessary, and AI finally lets them take a big swing at that. This is an amuse bouche. Roman/Rubin/Gaia may be the AI entree.

Use AI if you think you have to, but to push a "paper" onto arXiv and openly admit not understanding the analysis, or even knowing how to approach checking it? Wow.

interestingggg.... paper on the arXiv tonight of a new planet candidate found with and written up entirely by AI, including the caveat, "The author has not independently checked the analyses and does not have the expertise to verify every technical detail." arxiv.org/abs/2610.28575

And my symapthies with the hapless academic asked to review this - not only do you have to correct the slop, you now have to explain to the author what they did as well, apparently.

You will be able to ask, and it will be able to refuse, because it's sentient. Be careful not to startle or distress your sentient car! We advise speaking in a calm, steady voice when negotiating with your sentient car to turn left, or unlock the doors.

Oddly enough the most important part of Linus' missive isn't highlighted at all - for me it is "...I expect people to understand what they are doing." That, right there, is the whole fricking point.

i was just making this argument that LLMs are compilers and that we'll soon consider reviewing their code output the way we consider reviewing assembler now. output validation is always more important than reviewing lines of code. LLMs are way better at reviewing lines of code than me, anyway...

Oddly @mattkenworthy.bsky.social and I did this exact thing together. Introverts but willing to tolerate others in small doses?

This is a very exciting and elegant result, congratulations to the whole team!

Planets are 3D! Shocking I know but when we measure an exoplanet we collapse the info into an average while assuming the planet is a perfect circle. UNTIL NOW! @lili-alderson.bsky.social presents: A Spatial Map of the Atmospheric Limb of a Hot Jupiter arxiv.org/abs/2610.18806 1/n🔭🧪

This was posted on LinkedIn. Looks like a new record, possibly 3500 proposals. Good luck everyone on the JWST roulette. We really should have made two.

\vspace this, \vspace that, I just want data from the James Webb \vspace Telescope!

#JWST proposers, lest you not have enough to worry about already, check out some new language on use of the much-beloved \vspace parameter in your proposal jwst-docs.stsci.edu/jwst-opportu...

Good luck to everyone submitting their #JWST proposals today. My first version is in the bag, now to read it and find the O(dozens) of mistakes I made…. Scientific method FTW! #exoplanet #astrodon

New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

Congratulations to the whole team for this, I know people have been trying for a while to get radio emission from an exoplanet but it's fantastic to finally get a solid location and confirmation!

Yvette Cendes@whereisyvette.bsky.social

If @science.org is covering it, I guess I should share something here- we have for the first time definitively detected radio emission from a planet around another star! 🔭🧪🎢 What does this mean? Details in thread! (But TL;DR- still not aliens) 🧵 www.sciencenews.org/article/exop...

I remember visiting that place last year, or was it three years ago?

Also my view on driverless cars, AI + harmful algorithms is if the tech billionaires wanted me to trust them on this, maybe they shouldn't have adopted "move fast and break things" as their motto!

Just a normal camera, if “normal” means: 🔭 A 3.2-billion-pixel sensor 🌌 A field of view that could fit ~45 full Moons ⏱️ A new 8-gigabyte image every ~40 seconds NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory's LSST Camera is the largest ever built (thanks SLAC!). Ok, maybe that's not normal. 🔭🧪
