There is something grimly funny in pondering how the libertarian movement became a breeding ground for fascism, before deciding at least part of the reason is it must have been contaminated by cultural Marxism and critical theory...

Now if we can just get liberals to embrace a @mattpolprof.bsky.social style Liberal Socialism, we can really start talking about Liberty.

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

We have offered many philosophical formulations of liberalism, from @paulcrider.liberalcurrents.com's Principles of Liberalism essay in 2017 to @sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com's essay in The Reconstruction Papers. Today @adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com looks instead at ordinary life under liberalism.

There is something so fucking cringe about the thought that every single election they lose, a significant part of the right-wing commentariat will throw a fit and say its fake.

One ironic thing about the fascism discourse is how libertarians and some vulgar Marxists try to squeeze it into their familiar economic categories. One of the distinctive features of fascist ideologies was revulsion towards economic "materialism" in favor of nationalist/racial politics.

You see that all the time in fascist writings, from Mussolini to Heidegger. If anything fascists often critiqued liberalism/capitalism and socialism as more alike than different in their foregrounding of economic well being over allegedly more "heroic" or "spiritual" values.

By this logic a part time teacher who supports trans rights is an elitist while a conservative billionaire who controls much of society and its laws isn't...

A few weeks ago I spent a few days in this district, and despite driving all over it for many hours I only saw a single Trump sign the entire time. These @aselrod.bsky.social sketches of individual districts are worthwhile:

VA-06 is a very unlikely flip. But Beth Macy has the chance to do better there than any Democrat has for a long time. So I wrote about it for this week’s Better Win a District www.liberalcurrents.com/better-win-a...

Very pleased that our new essay collection "The Thinkers and Philosophers of the Far Right" has been approved. Including contributors like Laura Field, Ronald Beiner, @zackbeauchamp.bsky.social and many others we are going to examine the history, ideology, and role of far-right intellectuals.

If Alberta separatism crashing and burning on its first hurdle has any lessons, its a reminder that taking the bullshit spread by very online, very amplified right wing activists at face value is a mistake

One of the most chilling observations Ive read about Putin applies pretty well to the whole era of right wing populism: He doesnt have to convince you he's not corrupt. He just has to convince you everyone else is too.

One of the enduring characteristics of right-wing rhetoric is to redirect blame for social unhappiness from the practices and institutions left intellectuals usually criticize to the fact that left intellectuals are criticizing...

...On this view its not the fact that people are poor, living are expenses are high, or people feel powerless that makes them unhappy. Its those nasty left-wing professors who keep stirring up otherwise contentedly docile subjects.

'Socialism has its roots in liberal thought, and socialism without...[liberal influence]...is a socialism that abandons freedom and democracy and accepts authoritarianism as a valid principle of governance' (Edward Bernstein, "Evolutionary Socialism").

Looking forward to it @benburgis.bsky.social

It tells you a lot about the right's worldview that when they're tying to intellectually understand something like socialism that will never involve reading socialists....

And no one should be surprised that Hegseth has ordered this. It’s entirely in line with how he has always presented himself.

A livestreamed execution isnt about justice. Its about helping people enjoy inflicting and witnessing pain and violence while not feeling bad about those feelings because its construed as justice
