$72B of Anthropic’s $80B loss is a weird accounting issue and not actual dollars lost. They got an investment from Amazon but instead of getting the stock right away, Amazon will get it at IPO. Since then Anthropic is now valued at $1.5T to $2T and the value of stock they “owe” Amazon rose by $72B

Nonetheless, navigating between those who believe 'super-intelligence' is just around the corner and will 'completely revolutionise education' and 'tech is evil' is incredibly wasteful of time and energy

...at best they have reductionist metrics that their system is designed to maximise. 9) However, we know that metrics and accountability do work in education and that using them wisely and productively is a key management task (as in every other field)

10) As a result, the 'debate' is pretty sterile, between 'reactionaries' and 'evil capitalists'. Worse, the US is - as in every field - exporting its political and culture wars to everyone else. (East Asia looks at AI very differently. It also looks at student wellbeing differently too)

6) There is no reason to believe that the way we currently educate our children is optimal. Change is good (with evidence). +/- every other field of human endeavour has been improved with tech (which is more than 'ipads with software'. Education has been relatively very resistant

7) Most people resisting tech in education don't know very much about it at all. Can't describe what an LLM actually is. Don't know case examples from inside or outside education 8) Most of the tech-evangelists have very little understanding of pedagogy and developmental psychology....

3) A lot of education is manipulating symbols: language, maths, coding, etc. AI will eventually get to the point where it can do a great job of providing 1-1 tuition on this 4) A lot of education isn't about manipulating symbols. And AI is either largely irrelevant or actively harmful...

...for example, we know judgment, critical and creative thinking decline sharply among heavy/naive AI users. 5) Furthermore, citizenship, teamwork, healthy interpersonal relationships are essential outcomes of education. AI is largely peripheral at best and deskilling the heavily online at worst

I agree with a lot of this, and I disagree with a lot of this. All the following statements can be true (and I think probably are) 1) Gen AI ('AI') is a phenomenal productivity tool and isn't going away. Students and workers will need to use it 2) AI is very good at manipulating symbols

Despite some anxiety, America is “a resilient democracy”, argues Frances Lee, a professor of politics, in a guest essay. “That resilience rests not on politicians’ restraint but on institutional arrangements that are difficult to manipulate”

This is really big news: not that the Trump administration is corrupt (but more evidence for this is now in), but also just how amateurish they are. Putin is pretty much reading their texts.
