Somewhere, over the rainbow 🌈 (at the @biozentrum.unibas.ch), Sofie & Wojciech discovered how special cyanobacteria adapt to far-red light 🚨 by completely remodeling their photosynthetic proteins and membranes 🌱. An exquisite #TeamTomo study that spans scales and introduces hyperspectral CLEM. 🌎🌊🌾🔬🧪

I’m very excited to share the first big project from my PhD (my first proper-first, yay!) where we use cryoET and a fun new flavour of CLEM to study the re-organisation of photosynthetic machinery of cyanobacteria growing beyond the red limit of light. doi.org/10.64898/202...

Happy to see this one finally in print! A fantastic story led by Daan and the team. Congrats to everyone involved! #plantscience

Our work, Progressive oxygenation of developing leaves directs morphogenesis, is now out in Science Advances! We found that developing leaves oxygenate from tip to base, strikingly mirroring their developmental axis, and this drives leaf dev. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.aef2430 #plantscience

New PEC story 🌱 led by PhD cand Susi with amazing collabs Grimm, Hause & Robatzek labs! We patch-clamped isolated plastids to show that PECs mediate rapid cation flux across the IE. PECs relay Ca²⁺ signals into plastids & link Ca²⁺ to JA-mediated defense. #plantscience www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

At long last, the Chlamy chloroplast ribosome hat 🎩 (now renamed the arm 💪) is here to say hello👋! We first spotted this extended structure in green algae a decade ago, and @florentwaltz.bsky.social did beautiful work bringing it into focus! #CryoEM ❄️ #TeamTomo 🔬 #PlantScience 🌾 #ProtistsOnSky 🧪

Long in the making, but happy to present the Chlamydomonas chlororibosome! Cryo-ET🔬reveals a large new domain on the small subunit, built from multiple extensions in conserved ribosomal proteins. bioRxiv 📖: shorturl.at/q44tG This suggests greater chlororibosome diversity than expected! 1/n 🧵

Hey #TeamTomo …would you like to try some 🍦ICECREAM!? Our @unibas.ch colleagues over at the @ivandokmanic.bsky.social lab have developed a stunningly effective tool to de-noise and de-wedge your tomograms. The contrast and details will give you brain freeze! 🍨❄️🤯 Please try, we need feedback 🧪🧶🧬🔬

Ricardo D. Righetto@lifeonthewedge.bsky.social

Our colleagues Vinith Kishore and Valentin Debarnot from the @ivandokmanic.bsky.social lab have come up with an amazing deep learning tool for denoising and filling the missing wedge in #cryoET data. I'm pleased to introduce Icecream🍧

Hot off the press, first PI paper 🎉. Reporting a novel protein (VIA1) involved in thylakoid membrane biogenesis. VIA1 (similar to ESCRT-II) and bind to chloroplast ESCRT-III (VIPP1). Showing a direct role of VIPP1 in thylakoid biogenesis. @cp-cellreports.bsky.social tinyurl.com/msrepdna

So, we all know that VIPP1 (the Very Important Protein in Plants) is the "photosynthetic ESCRT-III", required for the biogenesis and maintenance of light-harvesting thylakoids. But what about ESCRT-II, you say? ...Meet VIA1! Congrats @mayankdu.bsky.social on your lab's first paper! #PlantScience 🧪 🌾

We propose a distinct mechanism of membrane remodeling in chloroplasts with resemblances to cytosolic ESCRT pathway. Kudos and congratulations to the first author and my first student Irem Yilmazer for all her hard work. And, big thanks to my mentor Prof. Zeeman for his continuous support. 🙏

Preprint alert, please share!! With our new study, we engineered an orthogonal hypoxia-responsive system in plants inspired by mammalian HIF protein degradation.
