The real AI apocalypse is not about robots messing with the power grid it is AI destroying the minds of kids, who, with educators pushing these tools, are at real risk of loosing the ability to write independently.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

💯 Also, is this titan of science aware that literally all branches of modern mathematics & science are indebted to the mathematical breakthroughs developed by medieval Islamic mathematicians?

First of all this is racist af. Second of all, it’s wildly untrue. And third of all, a group of people does not need to produce science or literature to be fully human or whatever!!! What is this, 1780??? (This is a topic in my book btw)

I did not have “RFK Jr echoes David Hume” on my bingo card

Alright fine here is my expertise! Cross-reference this Neanderthal’s comments with this footnote from David Hume, “of national characters” (1753):

People don’t understand why I keep noting that BlueSky is not a bubble, it is a counterpublic. It serves its own organizational function: you can see in realtime in January 2025, on multiple types of social media, shouting that an executive order is instruction to an agency. This one stuck.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

As a teacher, when I've asked parents to describe their child, it's because I truly want to know what you think is important for me to understand about them. We’re not looking for perfect adjectives. We’re trying to build a relationship with you and with your child. Please be human. Like this. 👇🏻

My kids are ten and I’ve done this exact exercise. Even if you can’t say everything, you get to think about your kid in each of their little areas. An image or memory of your kid comes up- oh, is this going in the answer? No wait, maybe this!!! And so on.

Very excited::: THIS WEDNESDAY, Oct 28, at 6pm at the at the Mahindra Center at Harvard (Am lit seminar): Lara Langer Cohen: "Mourning, Organizing: The Work of Grief in Five Black Women's Friendship Albums.” With Charline Jao responding. 133 Barker, 12 Quincy Street, Cambridge.

This is a beautiful thread. To see a loving father gush about how much joy he gets from his children makes it all the more inexplicable that anyone would want to outsource this to AI.

It’s because a parent is outsourcing their insight and empathy for their own kid. And it’s definitely not the only way that’s happening.

I think this is what depresses me the most about AI. This person could not even think about her own child for five minutes without help

So you pick three of them, or maybe you pick four just because, like, surely four is fine - like if the child is funny, creative, a swimmer, and extroverted, then this damn teacher is getting all four! Sorry little worksheet my obsession over the child has overwhelmed your request!

And really all of this could take just five minutes or half an hour and you’ve come away feeling like what you have in your life so far exceeds the capacity of any possible answer to any question anyone could dare pose to you, and that is exactly what being alive is for, that is the whole purpose

View full thread

It’s like the little things they do and like audition for the silly question, and you can watch them in your minds eye be nice, talented, interested in the world, and then you are overcome with love and happiness and forget about the question in the first place

And then your like, oh no I have to choose three things! Okay, you realize, it doesn’t matter which three, it’s an impossible task, the kid is too miraculous in all of their activities and habits and interests and behaviors. Choosing which three things is arbitrary. There are five million things
