What GrapheneOS is doing around security and privacy is top notch, but it's no surprise that Google would pull the plug on AOSP as a useful base to build on. This is textbook enshitification.

The only viable path, even if it takes much longer, is to make @postmarketos.org as secure as GrapheneOS, and ideally run on open hardware. This will likely take another decade, given how hard it is to fund these projects.

Trying a new design for Beaver's homescreen: a scrolling page with sections you can re-order, and a fixed header (dubbed the canopy) that gets smaller when you scroll up. Feels very webby, not just a boring icon grid. Still WIP (no way to add / remove content yet...) but I think I like it!

Browser people, has anyone tried to improve the history back / forward mechanism and recognize that we sometimes navigate more by exploring branches? Example: A -> B -> C -> B -> D turns into A -> B -> D and C disappears. That's not ideal! I'd like it to be A -> B -> (C | D)

ATproto community: "We're building the new web!" Also ATProto community: "Biggest news this week is the iOS and Android apps from Blacksky!" Make it make sense, folks 😜

June in Servo… 🫴👷‍♀️ SharedWorker now stable 🎨🛠️ more powerful ‘attr()’ and ‘calc()’ 📏📐 new @‌media query features 🏜️🥾 real world compat improvements 🙏📰 `@‌servo-highfive monthly update` servo.org/blog/2026/07...

We started to implement hardware APIs: so far we have screen control (brighness and on/off), as well as device shutdown & reboot. Next on the list is power source status and a idle detection API. Very happy with how closer to a BeaverPhone / BeaverDesk this starts to look like!

🦫 Beaver's internal pages for networking error and directory listing now use the design tokens from the current theme. Pretty happy with how nice they look!

Someone told me they thought what we are building is overly ambitious. If there was ever a time to be overly ambitious it is now.

Servo Report for Week 26 Highlights from the week: - Add aspect-ratio feature to stylo - Continued work switching to Compose UI in Android app module - Enable device-width/device-height media queries - Add support for devtools inspector to copy as inner/outer html

Just merged the support for previews on hover for a few records types in the ATProto feed viewer of Beaver 🦫 I learned quite a bit building this feed viewer and will try to write that down before deciding the next steps implementation-wise.

Getting Beaver's ATProto feed closer to something I can daily drive: - displaying only the new posts/records since last refresh. - previews for various kind of records. Now I want it to be really usable! Also idly wondering if I should look into ActivityPub & RSS/Atom feeds.

Lots of improvement in Beaver's AtmosFeed: - follows the OS theme. - infinite scroll. - filter by record type. - better profile display for users you don't follow. - local search. - like and repost. All this without an AppView, straight to and from your PDS. Creating posts are coming next!

Servo Report for Week 25 Highlights from last week: - Add support for CSS gradient color interpolation method - Implemented pointer and hover media features - Enabled loading of servo: URLs from command line and location bar in servoshell - Enabled SharedWorker support

Question for #atproto people: Is there a reason to not set the ETag header on xrpc responses for the com.atproto.sync.getBlob endpoint? It looks like the blob CID is an obvious candidate to me?

When full User Agency meets ATProto: what can you do once you sync in locally all the records from accounts you follow? Some early experiments: - Augment your browser history - Check references to a web page - Build your own feed with no AppView (next: publish as a Web Tile!). Enjoy in 🦫 today!

Step 4: we built a very simple local view of your ATProto feed: this is all using local content for records. Only the blobs are fetched remotely for now. Of course we could do a lot more here! That's all for this week-end hack-fest. This all merged in 🦫' s repo here: tangled.org/me.webbeef.o...

Step 1: syncing locally your ATProto records and the records of accounts you follow. This uses the com.atproto.sync.getRepo API. First run can take a while, but the next ones are diffs so are much faster.

Step 2: we index the text from records, and extract urls. This let us search records and urls from the universal search box in Beaver. If the page you browse is a known urls, you can check who in your ATProto graph has mentioned it.

As promised, here's a recording of the new 🦫 desktop UI in action! Featuring: - Multiple desks and a dock - Tiled and floating web views - A command palette to search anything - Content blocker integration - Seamless p2p integration of all your Beavers. ... and more, but that video was long enough 😜

Teasing of the new desktop UI for 🦫... Will try to record a walk through in the next few days, because screenshots are not the best way to show how it works.
