one can quibble about whether present technologies can achieve “agi” through scale and iteration, but massive spending on research to pursue every angle on this stuff IS going to find further means to increase capabilities. this is good on how marxist semiotics understands the resulting questions

Nico@nico-encounter.bsky.social

My new essay on Marxism and artificial intelligence! I show using the negative materialism of semiotics why we should take AGI and AI safety seriously, and also examine this new phase of class struggle through Marx's political economy. cosmonautmag.com/2026/10/marx...

honestly i’m baffled that so many people in mainland china are still buying pure ice cars in the current situation. there’s a perception of a proven safety record for some models i guess but evs have improved a lot on those issues in recent years. public charging in major cities also seems sorted

Albert Pinto@70sbachchan.bsky.social

"You wouldn't know it if you live in the USA or consume US media and politics, but the fight between EVs and ICEs is basically over. Internal combustion is on it's way out. First it'll look slow, then fast. Fleet turnover will lag sales. But ALL the growth globally is in EVs." - @jessedjenkins.com

Policy in China for steel decarbonization has been more muted than in the US and Europe, focusing largely on incremental plant-level emissions reductions. But the building blocks for green steel are being laid now, setting China up to be a major player if that changes. New: rhg.com/research/fut...

Look at that enormous crack spread /oh my god what is that man doing to his economy

Rory Johnston@roryjohnston.bsky.social

ALL-TIME HIGH DIESEL CRACK The US diesel crack spread (i.e., refining margin) is now sitting above $111/bbl (vs Brent), the highest level on record. The industrial workhorse fuel is currently trading at roughly $220/bbl, more than double the price of prompt crude futures.

everyone gets religion (orthodox marxism) when the haute bourgeoisie acquire the “generic substitution of machines for labor power” capital commodity and immediately start to enact the marxist eschaton (rapid deskilling of labor, investment to protect firm level profits at expense of overall rop)

america is unique in having many millions of multimillionaires. this stratum of world eating petty bourgeois aristocrats (who benefit from various inflows of wealth relative to global peers as our workers do relative to theirs) are underdiscussed in their political role in america’s unique madness

as long as we’re wasting time with goofy legal challenges based on the wrong principles i strongly encourage someone to try making them change it to the ritual decalogue

Brendan@bpdiamond.bsky.social

That's true, but which Ten Commandments are we even talking about? Catholics and Protestants see the delineation between the first and second differently. And is it in its original Hebrew, or is it an English translation of the Latin translation of the Greek translation of the original Hebrew?

trying to persuade theocrats to accept the value of toleration and pluralism seems pointless to me. threaten to teach their kids about the source-critical school of biblical scholarship

1) foreign maoists believed many delusions about china in the 60s. “urban workers have relatively good job security and healthcare for a country at this income level” is probably the worst example of such an error you could invent. i am legitimately baffled how this could be your best effort

Bill McKay@mckay4senate.bsky.social

Left-wing writer visits China, 1960: my government sponsored tour assured me that workers have strong protections and good healthcare! Left-wing influencer visits China, 2020s: everything is so cheap there!

2) looking back at how i expected history to play out as a teen in the 00s, chinese industrial policy making transportation electrification and renewable energy infrastructure way cheaper way faster than believed possible is by far the most political-strategically significant divergence

trying to workshop a “discourses on salt and iron” pun. so far i’ve got: two guys playing golf, the evening comes and they blast flood lights, one asks how the club keeps operating after the new government rules on sustainability, “the facility stores up solar during the day, this course is… etc.”

Chinese researchers are advancing iron-based and sodium-ion #battery technologies as lower-cost alternatives to #lithium-ion batteries. By using iron and sodium (derived from common salt), they can reduce costs while improving supply chain security for large-scale #energystorage #ActOnClimate

it’s important to understand that this and the broader state of affairs around it are a fully logical result of the trajectory of american anticommunism and the wider ideological groundwork set up to justify it. any objection you can raise has been drilled out of boomer/xer minds since childhood

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

I cannot stress enough that the Steam Machine is one of the most beautifully designed pieces of hardware I have ever held. It is SILENT. I had to put my ear to it to hear it. They basically made a giant blower sink with a custom shroud and custom fan. It is not a beast power wise, but I am in awe.
