It's time for the annual Halloween episode of the AVoCADo GamesCast! On this episode, @stevetown.bsky.social, I, and some of our online friends discuss murder mystery games, take a look at this year's Star Wars games, and talk about our favourite witches, warlocks, wizards, and sorcerers in games.

RIP BioWare. The time for nostalgic reminiscences will come, but now is the time for anger. Anger at studio leads, whose mismanagement and penchant for grinding employees into the ground, euphemistically referred to as "BioWare magic," ensured that the studio could never find a stable footing.

Anger at the entire fucking late-capitalist hellscape, where artists profit not from the fruits of their labour, and art is sacrificed on the altar of a false machine god who tells you to put glue on your pizza.

You should be angry. BioWare was taken from you. BioWare was taken from the fans who played their games. BioWare was taken from the developers who built it and formed its beating heart. BioWare was taken from us, and we got absolutely fucking nothing in return.

Anger at Electronic Arts, who batted the studio around like a tetherball, forcing them to reboot Dragon Age: The Veilguard each time the wind changed direction. Anger at Andrew Wilson and Jared Kushner, who, dressed in twin skinsuits, rendered EA unto a repressive, journalist-murdering petrostate.

It's time for some shameless self-promotion! The latest episode of the AVoCADo GamesCast is here, on which we talk about the gaming showcases of late summer, Chaos;Head Noah and edgy visual novels, how Fields of Mistria creates a virtual community, and what makes Big Walk so special.

So much of games criticism is pointing at an emperor dressed in full regalia and screaming, "HE'S NAKED! HE'S NAKED! HE'S NAKED!"

Fundamentally, we need to culturally decouple from the idea that media critique is something that can be "won", with a definitive correct answer. Sometimes a piece of art is divisive, and the concensus is the lack of consensus, and that's sometimes interesting in itself.

AI: The Somnium Files — When you discover the *real* reason why Psyncs are limited to six minutes. Just a perfect instance of taking a seemingly innocuous detail and using it as a key to unlock the whole plot.

I actually don't wanna share where a narrative wrecked any sense of goodwill, I wanna know the moments where you went "let's fucking goooo"

Agricultural scientists are wild. They keep inventing new foods by making different plants fuck each other year after year.

I think a lot about how we currently live in the utopia imagined by the dreadful midcentury lawmakers who wrote codes like this—dominated by cars and highways, neighborhoods sapped of people and commerce, everything segregated to oblivion—and how we can and should put all their ideas in the trash

bowling is such a genius social event. the exact balance between like 10% activity to provide purpose to the 90% hanging out and drinking. bowling was the original friendslop

I'm not going to link to that Epilogue Gaming piece, but the most obvious reason to dismiss it is because it features six photos of Jacob Geller when one would have sufficed.

Whether someone who committed a heinous act can be rehabilitated is really orthogonal to the question "Do I want to watch a rapist talk about video games?", the answer to which is "no."

It's time to vote for better transit! Jeff Leiper is the only mayoral candidate with a serious plan to fix OC Transpo and get our transit system working again. Early voting is October 1st to 4th, and October 16th. The main election day is October 26th. Visit ottawa.ca/vote for more information.

While it’s great fun to clown on Matthew Ball, it would be nice if anyone in games media had a moment of reflection about the 200-page reports of his that they used to uncritically share.

Haha, I mean there is some schooling happening but I wouldn't say it's happening in the direction described here...

It’s worth noting that this piece attributes anything positive that has happened at Xbox over the past few months to Sharma but removes her agency from anything negative, e.g. layoffs and studio closures.

“She arrived for lunch at the Modern in a suede jacket despite the sweltering heat and wildfire smoke outside. Alongside her was Craig Cincotta, a corporate attaché in a fedora." www.nytimes.com/2026/09/30/a...

It’s entirely possible that Sharma doesn’t have agency here, and cost-cutting measures are being dictated by the Microsoft C-suite. But if so, then *that’s* the story, not… whatever this shit is.

Some people will try to sell this as a thing that every executive does, but it’s worth asking the rhetorical question: Do any journalists have Strauss Zelnick or Shuntaro Furukawa on speed dial?

Imran Khan@imrankhan.bsky.social

That...explains a lot.

One of the most maddening and morally reprehensible things about society is our tendency to treat adolescence not as a thing that teenagers experience, but as a problem that they impose on the rest of us.

I dunno man, it sounds like poor hygiene is a viable strategy here.

A Pokemon Champion is urging players to improve their hygiene after a competitor's smell made him throw up Donghun Youm says he couldn't focus "due to how putrid the smell was" and even told a judge about the stench

In this Video Game Diary, I discuss what it's like to game through an injury and how it affects the types games I can play. Plus, I ponder what makes a game "cinematic." Read the piece for entries on 007 First Light, Bugsnax, Forza Horizon 6, Road to Empress II, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

I forgot to skeet about 20 More, Somehow Even Smaller, Mazes, but you should play 20 More, Somehow Even Smaller, Mazes. It’s just as delightful as 20 Small Mazes. FLEB has the sauce.

Renaming a developer to “Halo Studios” and now being like “btw they aren’t making the next Halo” is just incredible

“Pro-genocide billionaire rallies fellow stadium owners to deplatform anyone who vocally opposes genocide” strikes me as a bigger story than “Milquetoast dweeb who makes bad music capitulates.”

Congratulations to Christian Harrison, Neal Skupski, Kateřina Siniaková, Taylor Townsend, and Elena Rybakina. Alex Zverev beats women.

Upcoming Work of Art will be bad. If it reviews poorly, then I will be vindicated. If it reviews well, then that means everyone who reviewed it was a fanboy, and I will also be vindicated. I am very smart, and I have in no way based my identity around hating Upcoming Work of Art.

One of the few bright spots in the games industry in 2026 has been Konami making it very clear that they're in the business of producing games again.

I don't throw the term "crime against humanity" around lightly, but I have had to listen to that Beck Bennett/Kyle Mooney Squarespace ad multiple times.

This whole thing is ridiculous. It's only a scandal because Rockstar has been playing absurdly coy with a game it knows will sell a bajillion copies regardless. The only party harmed by these leaks is Netflix, which must've paid through the nose to have the reveal.
