"Why don't you go to the bathroom in more survival games?" is a joke that came up during our podcast over the summer. I reached out to developers about it, and their answers were complicated and fascinating, from spiraling design issues to the deeper meaning behind where to put the toilet

NEW: I spoke with current and former EA employees to understand how the latest layoff round played out and the realities of daily life at the U.S. publisher. The short version? EA is controlled by an executive class that "cannot fail, only be failed." Workers, then, will always pay the price.

NEW: Skydance Corp, the new owner of Warner Bros Games., has today informed staff that they will be required to work in-office five days a week. In the email announcing the policy, the company also rolled out a 'Voluntary Buyout Program' to let employees "move on in a way that works for them."

I am no longer safe from the mice in the daytime, so *that's* not a good sign (The landlord says he's sending a guy, after lecturing me about not telling him how bad the problem was, uh, before it was bad)

When I first moved in here like a decade ago I plugged every conceivable crack with steel wool to the extent that an exterminator once asked me if I was OK, so the fall of my defenses here is *also* a real bummer (Where are they coming from?? How I have hunted for their ingress point!)

This ProPublica/NYT article is (imo) very good, but these two different headlines--both of which I'd say in fairness are accurate to the story, and highlight different aspects of it that might draw a reader in--are fascinating

To Big Brain it, 'politics' aside, probably a national reader is more likely to click some guy's complex personal journey than conflict in a small town they've never heard of. At the same time, the 'placeness' of it--the neighbors, the town--are part of what makes the story, well, the story

If it were me and I *had to*, as it were, I think at the least I'd have kept the first sentence the same in both and done different second sentences--the NYT dek does that work but I imagine a lot of readers skim over deks

I joined the @aftermath.site crew this week to chat through my pivot to independence with @verticalslice.news and other video game GUBBINS. Here's my partial take on the Asha Sharma marketing tour:

Why do mainstream publications keep trying to help Xbox rehabilitate its image? aftermath.site/aftermath-hour...

I request way too many books from the library and then never get the chance to read them all, but it's fun when the library says I have a hold ready and I'm like "who requested this book, this doesn't sound like me"

The mouse in my house vanished into the bathroom, so I shoved a bunch of mousetraps in there and taped the bottom of the door closed, and while there is literally no way this is going to successfully trap it, it does also mean I've locked myself out of my own bathroom I guess forever now

Christianity Today’s new editor in chief on why they pulled, and then re-published, this article. Apparently CT is adding a corrections policy where they can unpublish something and edit it if the editor gets cold feet? Never heard of anything like this. www.christianitytoday.com/2026/10/a-no...

Yesterday, Christianity Today published a piece on the late purity culture matriarch Elisabeth Elliot, with newly discovered private correspondence suggesting she may have been bisexual. Today, the article has disappeared without a trace.

A container of crystallized ginger fell off my pantry and the mouse in my apartment went ham trying to get into it (judging by the pile of poops), and will it be the magical bait that finally lures it into the traps? (I bet not! This is the first proof I've had that the mouse has any plans at all!)

I bet my upstairs neighbor thinks it's fine that every night I stomp around clapping and chanting "I am in here! I am people!" or shout nonsensically in Irish in an effort to turn this situation into something productive (I did learn a new word though! Fiosrach = inquisitive)

Also I demand recognition for how much restraint I showed in containing everything I know about polar exploration, one of my favorite topics, to just one paragraph, and also how much I did *not* go off about the Hollow Earth, which I am (eternally, sigh) writing a book about

Me, reading things in Irish designed for learners: I'm really good at reading Irish! Me, after the NYPL scanned me an Irish short story from their research library (*so* quickly, shoutouts libraries!): Oh.

The story, "Athair," is apparently on the test y'all take in school, so I am torn between being humiliated that I can't understand a lick of something deemed comprehensible for teens, but on the flipside you all have years more Irish than me so

While the timeline around GTA VI and The Game Awards definitely raised my eyebrows, this is just how the Awards work--though, maybe more tellingly, it's also the most I feel like I've heard people (myself included!) discuss the "awards" part of the Awards in ages
