[Commentary] Meeting in Yerevan near Mount Ararat, delegates at CBD COP17 face a modern "Noah’s Ark" moment. In a new op-ed, @mightyearth.org founder and CEO Glenn Hurowitz calls on world leaders to chart a bold new course for global biodiversity conservation before it’s too late.

The critically-endangered Tapanuli orangutan was only discovered in 2017, and only around 650 remain after recent landslides killed an estimated 58 of them - a huge proportion of the species wiped out in one disaster.

Orangutans are fascinating: they build a new nest to sleep in every day, and sometimes include rain covers, a pillow, and even ‘dolls’ or a set of small branches they hold, with no clear practical function. The good news is that it’s not too late to save them, but it must be now.

We need: 🚫 A permanent halt on deforestation in Tapanuli orangutan habitat 💸 Financial support from companies which have profited from deforestation, such as palm oil, rubber and paper companies 🔎 An IUCN study to evaluate the Tapanuli orangutan and point to a concrete pathway forward

The critically-endangered Tapanuli orangutan was only discovered in 2017, and only around 650 remain after recent landslides killed an estimated 58 of them - a huge proportion of the species wiped out in one disaster.

Roads, farms, dams and mines are the key threats, breaking up their habitat and leaving less room for the species to recover. Fatal conflicts with humans and killings for bushmeat are also suspected. As Mighty Earth’s Amanda Hurowitz says, “It’s really a red alert, all-hands-on-deck moment.”

"Rather than retreat from climate ambitions, companies like McDonald’s should focus on implementing menu shifts to lower-impact, plant-based foods and support industrywide policies that will make their own climate commitments achievable." nytimes.comOpinion | When Companies Retreat on Climate ChangeReaders respond to a front-page article about how big businesses are deserting climate goals. Also: President Trump’s polls, and his unreality.

Climate change is impacting global food systems, so why aren’t supermarkets taking it more seriously? Especially US supermarkets like Kroger, Costco, Walmart, Albertsons, and Publix which are performing worse than European counterparts at tackling superheating methane emissions.

Who decides what’s on your plate? Supermarkets decide what's on shelves, what's promoted, what's affordable, and what's visible. That means they can support climate-friendly, deforestation-free foods. The question isn't whether supermarkets have influence. It's whether they'll use it. 🌱

Yesterday, Earthsight and @mightyearth.org assembled outside Lineapelle London, a major leather trade fair, to ask tanneries and fashion brands: do you know where your leather comes from? 📢 Brands using leather must demand that all the leather they buy is deforestation-free and legally sourced.‼️🐄

What Colombia is doing could be implemented by other South American countries with large cattle herds, like Brazil and Bolivia, and we’ll be supporting work to make that happen. But there’s no need to wait: The largest meat companies in the world can and should require traceability now.

mightyearth.orgCEO Note: Breakthrough for Colombia's forests - Mighty EarthColombia has become the first rainforest nation to require nationwide cattle traceability. Meat companies will finally have to trace cattle back to their origin and determine whether or not they are linked to deforestation.

Dear Fashion Brands, why are you silent? With 16 civil society organizations including @mightyearth.org , @greenpeace.eu , @globalwitness.org, @umwelthilfe.bsky.social and @wwf.eu, we asked the European Fashion Industry to speak up. Because their absence is being read by decision-makers as consent.

clientearth.orgThe sustainability of your leather supply chain is under attack. You have four weeks to defend it. | ClientEarthTell the European Commission that leather supply chains must be deforestation-free and legal.

The proposal to remove leather from the #EUDR creates a ridiculous loophole...it means meat from cattle reared on deforested land would be banned, but the cow skins and hides would not. The two are intrinsically linked – to put it bluntly, the meat can’t be accessed until the skin is removed.

mightyearth.orgProposal to drop leather from EUDR creates "ridiculous loophole" - Mighty EarthCampaigners welcome news that the text of the regulation is not being reopened, but concerns remain over proposal to exclude leather

In our new report, Shelved Again: Supermarkets’ Missing Action on Methane, we ranked 20 of the world’s largest supermarkets on methane action and commitments and found that the sector is still lacking ambition – and the US is still lagging behind Europe.

Our thanks to you, @doggett.house.gov, and to all of your colleagues who co-signed for your leadership on this issue. The Trump administration does not speak for all Americans. The EUDR is an important policy for protecting the world's forests and should be implemented without further delay.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett@doggett.house.gov

As 25M acres of forests are destroyed each year, I led my colleagues in urging the European Union to stand tall against Trump's bullying. Our forests serve as our planet's lungs and home to so many unique plants and animals. The EU Deforestation Regulation is critical to protect forests worldwide.

Mighty Earth & Greenpeace International 🌍 are calling on McDonald's to protect the Soy Moratorium: "McDonald's can be a saboteur or a saviour...The fast-food giant must choose to fight for a mechanism that has spared huge swathes of the Amazon rainforest from being destroyed over the last 20 years."

In a world of electrostates, Trump and his blind corporate sycophants are threatening to turn American drivers into a bunch of chumps, locking us into dirty, polluting cars while the rest of the world races ahead to a cleaner, safer, more affordable future.

WATCH: More diggers, more destruction. Indonesia's Food & Energy Estates - the state-led industrial clearing of rainforests, grasslands and wetlands in South Papua - is set to be the world's largest deforestation project. Indigenous communities want their land and their peaceful way of life back.

Last year, the Dutch Grand Prix switched to serving burgers made from a 50-50 blend of beef & seaweed - without telling anyone. Why not announce the change? "Our fan base consists of petrolheads...we [would] get 20,000 complaints." In the end, they served 29,000 burgers and nobody noticed.

RVs shouldn’t kill orangutans, and RV lovers deserve better than vehicles made with wood from destroyed forests and orangutan habitat. RV companies must do their part to protect rainforests by committing to responsible wood sourcing standards. The latest on our campaign:
