I feel like the benefit of connecting on LinkedIn with a random salesperson that I'm not currently working with and will probably never buy their product is extremely low.

Pet peeve: Apps that stop doing a thing until you do another thing, and never let you know you need to do the latter thing to get the former thing working again unless you actually open the app, which you almost never do because the former thing is the only way you interact with it.

Thrilled beyond belief that every school that had my rising senior on their email list sent me, a higher ed administrator, a message letting me know that the Common App opened today.

Note to Democrats: Republicans are going to say you're Communists no matter how much you try to appease them or how much your policies move to the right. Maybe just focus on policies that actually help people instead.

Remember: organizational budgets are not bank accounts. If you're doing discretionary end-of-year expenses to "spend down your budget" and your institution is already operating at a deficit you're causing the institution to use reserves or debt to pay for it.

Yes, your institution should also not have a default "use it or lose it" budgetary policy. But if you manage a budget you should also have at least a dim awareness of your insititution's fiscal stance.

No one ever says "We hired this candidate from an exceptionally weak candidate pool. Really, we were lucky that anyone at all could perform even the basic qualifications of the position."

So +1 to Google Maps for now estimating my battery usage on a trip; -20 for saying my fastest route is one that will use 112% of my battery, and not factoring in charging time which will eliminate the time savings.

What makes me truly weary these days is that so much of our public discourse, and our policy, is predicated on things that people want to be true, instead of what is actually true.

Thinking about all the emails we're getting from colleges and universities because of having a high school junior, and realizing that colleges are one of the only places that advertise their product and may not let you ever actually buy it.

Of all the things I'm going to spend energy on as a parent, reading the newsletter of a school that there is almost zero chance my child will actually go to, much less reading the dozen or so of them I'm getting, is not likely.

Find me one person who got their kid to apply and enroll at a school because the quality of the parent and family newsletter was so amazing it was the inflection point.

#DearVendor inviting me to your conference dinner is like inviting your ex to a conference dinner. Because we signed a 5 year contract with one of your competitors last year. Are you sure you want me there?

Weird random fact: If you're paid biweekly you usually are paid 26 times a year. But if your first paycheck is issued on January 1st or 2nd, you would have 27 pay dates. Your employer may reduce the pay per check, or you might get a bonus payment.

I work in higher education and have a high school junior; I don't understand why random schools have signed us up for their parent newsletters. Do they really think that my child will say "well, I wasn't thinking of applying here; but they give such detailed and informative emails to parents!"

One of my great concert-going thrills (and there are many) was getting to see Midnight Oil in 2017 and 2022. Rob was an incredible drummer. RIP.

Rob Hirst, founding drummer of Midnight Oil, has died at 70. A fierce, inventive player and co-writer of songs that shaped generations. Sending love to his family, bandmates, and fans around the world.
