Some sort of devops or system or problem refinery. Smooth out everything but make sure you have all your dysfunctions together in one spot that gets scrutiny.

This is an interesting one. I think it’s the same reason a manager that knows how to do the things their reports do is a better manager. Same applies for anything you outsource. Sometimes it’s important and other times it’s distracting.

actual nuclear take

Has anyone looked up how various animals were considered in relation to humans? We’ve moved the goalpost on them several times. Same as AI. First they don’t have feeling. > Obvs feelings Then they aren’t smart > obvs smart Then they aren’t artistic > I dunno man..

I like steak as much as the next bloke but it’s definitely at the cost of killing an amazing creature.

The CISSP cert I got 20 years ago (ish) was peppered with ethical aspects about how to be responsible in the security and compliance domains. I’m sure that corpus is in the LLM training data somewhere!

Well now I need a TiVo so I can fast forward through the ads again. The cycle is never-ending

Disney+ has altered its user agreement to clarify that ads will be allowed on all subscription tiers. https://bit.ly/4hhOjBo

I’m inventing a new thing. Code driven development. You just get the code.

P(aul) Frazee@pfrazee.com

Increasingly convinced that specs are now the source and that code is an artifact akin to a lockfile.

I gotta say Gastown being a Gastown building machine is giving me GitLab flashbacks. The tool was for building the tool. The people were all developers who develop for development sake.

I post a lot more when I’m super exhausted and tired and kinda sick. It makes me question all you poasters. Like i have temporary brain damage, what’s your deal?

Reminds me of back when Verizon said something cost 0.002 cents per gigabyte and was then charging 2 cents per gigabyte. slashdot.org/story/06/12/...

slashdot.orgVerizon Can't Do Math - SlashdotBlogger George Vaccaro recently had a problem with his Verizon based on an unfortunate miscommunication of currency. The crux of the matter was that he was quoted .002 cents per kilobyte for data dur...

Anthropic’s 20x plan is only 10x, and there are class action suits about this In the fine print they say it’s only 20x “per 5h block”, but on weekly time scales it’s only 10x

It was pretty amazing how I was on stackoverflow dozens of times per day for years and then just never had to go there ever again.

I keep hearing that polling is terrible so I got a text to answer polling questions and clicked in… - 10 questions about demographics - 15 questions trying to get me to side with Israel or Palestine - Nothing about economics or local or national issues. Someone is p-hacking for antisemitism.

So this feels weird to me… we have LLMs tokenize a bunch of stuff, load up all the context, get an answer, get user feedback, and then put it in the trash for the next thing. Honeycomb looks at queries to see if the same one was run and just shows you the answer if it already ran. More of that.

I’m kinda grumpy that everyone is able to traverse 100+ floors, muliple times per day in season 3 of Silo.

Imagine if, every payday, everyone who had a 401k account purchased a few hundred dollars of gold. After 30 years, what would that do the price of gold? This is what happens for the index funds in the stock market… seems like it’s gonna create an issue.

Oh hey! I have an idea. Since the index funds are default-inflated every payday when 401ks land, we need to prevent any of those companies from doing stock buybacks.

The two I thought of: Stone Temple Pilots: Core The Offspring: Smash

There's a meme going around that other place that asks for a perfect 90s album that isn't by Nirvana or Alice in Chains. I submit to you: Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend Tricky's Maxinquaye The Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen The Afghan Whigs' 1965 Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes REMAutomatic for the People...

I feel like we learned this year what most of the world learned a while ago, the economic damage of *something* can be higher than that of a nuclear weapon. The lesson needs to be pointed at concentrations of power that aren’t middle-eastern as well. They’re very dangerous.

All I know these days is that security through obscurity is probably sufficient. Just vibe code everything but tell it not to use any. Instead extract any useful functions. Keep it oblique. No more npm worms or known vulnerable versions. Just unknown vulnerabilities. The safest kind

The amount of people defending Salesforce like it isn’t 99.9% tech debt, 0.1% useful integrations… Baffling.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

"We replaced Salesforce with a vibe-coded CRM built for our own workflows…That decision cut a $600,000 annual software bill to zero." - Fred Turner, CEO of Curative — Maintaining software isn’t free so the annual cost isn’t actually zero. We can only judge efforts like these after a year or more.

I’ve never been a fan of the “tech debt” analogy back when debt was a thing that had to be paid off. Now that we see debt is really just the ability of wealthy people to never pay back or get taxed, it is a much more apt analogy. Tech debt is code that is fine forever and one day dies.

I gotta say, on the AI compass it did a lot of mushing things like health diagnostic AI and weather modeling AI with chatbot spam factories. I consider that a category error akin to merging stakes and steaks in a grilling contest.

Is there an extended Maslow’s hierarchy of needs that includes frivolous stuff? How far up the extended tree do you need to be to decide to compile your own Linux kernel?

asking an LLM to draft a document is a good way to see the parts that don’t matter and should be reduced or avoided. Then write all the parts it didn’t and that’s the important part. Then only send me the part Claude didn’t write.

Were I to make an election policy, it would be that Election Day is 11/5 or whatever (a public holiday) and the results are collected over the following week and the results are released all at once the next week. The appearance of votes changing as each district reports is the problem.

My only concern here is what happened last time. Conservatives put a bunch of nazis on their ballots. Liberals called them nazis. They got elected because the electorate likes nazi policies. Now liberals are like “surely you can’t support pedophiles!” But… like.. the president and his cabinet.

James Talarico@jamestalarico.bsky.social

Ken Paxton just gave an Epstein-style deal to a pedophile. Paxton released Adam Hoffman — an admitted child rapist — back on our streets after Paxton’s rich lawyer friend got involved. The Epstein Class has no place in Texas. Ken Paxton has no place in the US Senate.

Since gas prices went up by like, a lot… does that mean an EV with 55 mpg equivalent is now getting like 67 mpg?

It’d be impressive but the monorail only takes like 5 watts per day because it’s always broken

BlogMickey.com@blogmickey.com

Just one year of Walt Disney World's solar output could power the monorail for 34 years. Disney shared that figure alongside the announcement that four solar projects can now meet 100% of the resort's daytime energy needs. ☀️ Read more: blogmickey.com/2026/04/walt...

I love the use of Breaking. “Breaking news! Nothing is different from how it just was. And looks to be staying that way”

Not sure why Phineas and Ferb was made to be very high quality. I’m so glad my kids found it. It’s had me in tears several times over the past month.

Seems to me like if a president is creating rogue state and war crime vibes, if the congress and courts responsible for balancing the power aren’t doing so, they are complicit. If the attempt to rein him in fails, okay. Supporters of that attempt may hold up better at The Hague.

When “the powers that be” decided to systematically gut the US workforce by offshoring, you couldn’t reskill your way out of that. The only way to keep your job was by moving to a different country and take a huge pay cut. Not that it was even really possible. These “powers” are looking at LLMs now

My 11 year old came home from school and proceeded to login to his school Google workspace account and use Gemini to help write a story. He was delighted the whole time. I told him to be careful with it and be sure to carefully read and edit everything before asking anyone else to read it. 🤞

@cassidoo.co your pocket calendar app was very helpful for a bunch of families to coordinate Girl Scout troop availability. Just the right level of abstraction to get clear answers for the whole summer.

Seems like people value writing as a way to distill messy thoughts into coherent plans, designs, etc. When an LLM does the refinement from cloud of neurons into words, the human part is reduced from 100% of the words to 5% per prompt. Maybe less or more… definitely not 100%. That’s fine sometimes.

It’s interesting to see people be alarmed that the DOJ is recoding the searches of people looking at sensitive data. It’s important to have that history. I’m shocked that it would be allowed out of the scif on sheets of paper. The searches of sensitive data are at least as sensitive as the data.
