The 5-year cancer survival rate is up to 70% SIDS deaths have decreased by over 50% 89% decline in tornado deaths All thanks to federal investment in science and OUR tax dollars at work!

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

If anyone else is feeling bouts of actinic rage because their country is being blamed and threatened while in the midst of a natural disaster where people's communities are being destroyed and lives put at risk, please know you are not alone. I have nothing else to say. So tired of this shit.

On Remembrance Day, when time and circumstances permit, I turn on CBC around 11, and listen to the ceremony, to "The Last Post", to the recitation of "In Flanders Fields", and to the salute. 1/3

I think about young men, boys really, thinking of their homes, their parents, friends, pets and sweethearts as they lay dying on some field in Europe (doesn't have to be Europe but that is what I imagine), and I cry. 2/3

In the wake of the Hegseth/Trump lecture to US military leadership, question for Republicans that feel like National Security is important: what would Jack Ryan think of all this?

Just voted. As always; quick, easy, pleasant. Teared up a little on the way out of the polling station. I am achingly fortunate to be a citizen of this country. If you're Canadian, please vote. Please thank your poll workers. That is all

I am begging progressives (of which I consider myself one) to learn to prioritize problems. Right now problem #1, #2 and #3 are surviving the Trump presidency with our sovereignty intact. If that means an issue you care about gets deprioritized that's unfortunately the situation we're in now.

Fuck. This is like trying to watch TV with a meth crazed racoon that has the remote. It's loud, and he keeps flipping between channels, and something smells bad, but you really dont want to know what it is .

This remains a great example. Not all problems can be solved by the market. Don't get me wrong, competitive markets can be amazing. But market failure is a thing. And, we can chose to implement non market solutions to certain problems that are breathtakingly effective and okay for themselves.

One month pause on auto tariffs. Wasn't there but guess is they promised to shut Canadian and Mexican plants but "just give us some time". I say no change to our response except Doug can say he'll keep the electricity flowing. Honour the treaty you signed

All these "masculinity" fetishists appear to have forgotten one of the main tenets of being a man (adult, but work with me); be accountable -own your failures. The whole movement is a permission structure to blame mediocrity on others. These guys are so mid.

That's 9 tweets an hour (plus replies). This dude is allegedly running the world's 7th biggest company (by market cap) as well as like 6 other companies and completely overhauling the federal entire government. And high as a fucking kite the whole time.

Musk has tweeted more than 220 times in last 24 hrs. That's not counting the replies.

This. So much this. Social media has created this monster where people can monetize faux expertise. Stupid, bored, or ashamed people are easy marks.

Jordan Peterson is another example of what I call a competency cosplayer. Informed people immediately identity him as an intellectual fraud, but uninformed people can fancy him an intellectual who flatters their unexamined prejudices.

It’s remarkable how quickly the Trump team has sabotaged all the things that actually made the U.S. influential on the global stage. Free trade economics, strong diplomatic networks and alliances, the soft power of democratic culture and values, the hard power of a competent military …

Ok. So, I'm nobody, and few follow me. But, just in case, if I see threats of, or calls to, violence, real or implied, in my replies, it is an instant block. Doesn't matter who is being threatened and if you think they deserve it. No exceptions.

If Canadian universities had a bit of vision, they would be launching a Manhattan project to poach every US-based top researcher. And the federal government would be drastically expanding tri-council funding and creating an expedited review process for those holding NSF and similar grants.

This. The facts about nature do not correspond to some loudmouth's idea of "common sense". Howz about we mind our own fucking business and let individuals and their parents make their own decisions. Being awful to people who are not like us should not be the default.

Something to fire back with the next time some MAGAt tries "using science" to try to justify their bigotry.

It says something very important about the current state of capitalism that the most successful business leaders don't bother to lead their businesses and focus on public celebrity, social media and lobbying. In econ 101 we had a name for this...rhymes with "park it, jailer".

I keep thinking, "oh....now we've reached peak stupid". And, invariably, they prove me wrong. The thing I hate most about the last 8 years is how it makes me just sad about my fellow humans.

Ope! The bill would make it “unlawful for a person to discharge genetic material without the intent to fertilize an embryo.” www.wlbt.com/2025/01/22/m...

Exactly. Government isn't perfect and bureaucracy can have problems. But the alternatives to good, effective government are demonstrably worse. Grow the EFF up people.

Since they vilify government all day every day, here’s a reminder of “50 ways government works for us”👇🏽🇺🇸 Government is not the enemy. It’s not about “Big Government”, it’s about good government. Elect people who believe in it, not the ones who seek to destroy it.

Nothing illustrates how iconic James Earl Jones was quite like this cloud gag. Also, since I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet, along with the legendary pop culture roles, he’s excellent in the Great White Hope. RIP
