Remember, healing is not linear 🩵 What’s one small win you’ve had recently, despite the ups and downs?

The mental health system is under immense strain. Something has to change. This review is a chance to understand what’s driving the increase in mental health problems. This must not be used as a way to justify who deserves support and who doesn’t. 1/2

Instead, it needs to focus on ensuring everybody gets the support that is right for them. We’re ready to help with this review, making sure it’s shaped by the voices of those living with mental health problems. 2/2

Dear UK government, your Autumn Budget made some good moves – scrapping the 2-child limit will lift thousands of children out of poverty, and investing in Neighbourhood Health Centres could help communities thrive. 🧵 1/6

Young people are waiting. Families are struggling. Communities are under pressure. Where’s the plan? 5/6 We need: • A funded strategy for mental health • Action to cut waiting lists • Young Futures Hubs in every local area

No published strategy. No guarantee of adequate funding. No promise to cut waiting lists. No commitment to deliver Young Futures Hubs everywhere they’re needed. 3/6

Mental health makes up 20% of all ill health – but only receives 9% of NHS spending. And that share is falling. Without stronger protections, mental health will keep slipping behind other areas of care. 4/6

Poverty is one of the biggest drivers of poor mental health – so this work really matters. But there was no mention of mental health at all. And here’s the problem: there’s still no clear plan to tackle the mental health crisis. 2/6

By acting on the insights and the recommendations here, we can become a mentally healthier society. Let's create a mental health system that works for all of us.

Meanwhile, 100,000 adults and 35,000 children and young people have been waiting more than 2 years for their second contact with mental health services.

Our findings show that: 33% of people we surveyed said that the support they received from their GP didn’t meet their needs 38% of people from racialised communities we surveyed feel they’ve experienced unfair treatment from their GP.

Mental health support isn’t equal. People from racialised communities face worse outcomes and unfair treatment. The UK government needs to go further to stamp out racism in the Mental Health Act for good These stats below are from England only. 1/6

CTOs rose by 17% last year. That’s not progress. The bill needs to be reformed. Limit CTOs to 12 months and address the racial disparities. 5/6

Last year, the average length of stay in a mental health hospital was longer for under 18s than most adult groups. We urgently need more funding and investment in early mental health support to prevent these long hospital stays. 6/6

Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) don’t work. They don’t stop hospital readmissions and people don’t know how to get off them. Black people are 8.5 times more likely to be put on one. 4/6

When will the UK government properly address the serious issues with the Mental Health Act? It needs urgent and more ambitious reform to tackle racial injustices and to better support young people. 2/6

We’re seeing a lot of racist rhetoric in the UK right now, including against refugees and asylum seekers. That feels frightening and exhausting - especially for those of us from racialised communities. Seeing this so close to home can be scary. And it can take a toll on our mental health.
