The likely political motivation behind these mailers? The Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, state Rep. James Talarico, supports LGBTQ+ rights, a stance that has drawn attack ads from groups supporting the GOP nominee, Ken Paxton. mirandacgreen.substack.com/p/the-myster...

El Niño is shifting the storm track toward California this winter. With the long-term warming trend amplifying El Niño effects, "Odds of a very wet winter are significantly higher than they would usually be," @weatherwest.bsky.social @ucanr.edu climate scientist, tells @mirandagreen.bsky.social

This week on Boiling Point I speak with climatologist @weatherwest.bsky.social about the "Super El Niño" & the heavy rains & high tides it might bring. An interesting pt: The sea level rise we'll see is a window into our future in 10 yrs. Will we be prepared? podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a...

It’s becoming a convenient escape hatch for people to explain away all global warming trends as a product of the weather pattern. Certain folks are pointing to past years we've experienced known El Niños as proof that climate change isn't a factor at all.

Others are using this year's El Niño to attack climatologists and scientists as "alarmists" and argue away the science that is showing that an El Niño-- paired with already historically high temperatures, sea levels and hot oceans will make things that much worse.

New from Tow: One org requested all syllabuses for 74 courses at UNC Chapel Hill with terms related to DEI. Their mission to “expose and root out corruption in government..." They claim to have filed more than 100,000 FOIA requests and nearly 100 lawsuits since 2022 By @mirandagreen.bsky.social

I missed this excellent look by @mirandagreen.bsky.social into the conservative funders, pink slime websites, + campus activists that attacked campus #DEI. www.cjr.org/tow_center/h... Same tactics + some of the same groups (Accuracy in Media) that we found in our censorship investigation 👇

W/ith @giselilla.bsky.social + @cargocultscientist.bsky.social, I delved into the origins of the “censorship-industrial complex” idea, how it went from the fringes of the online right to a driver of Trump2 policy, + what it means for the Internet. www.technologyreview.com/2026/08/07/1...

Today's Government Accountability Office report on ICE's Camp East Montana is scandalous: - Evidence of a homicide was destroyed or went missing - Detainees with HIV and diabetes were not given treatment plans - Cells were filthy and only cleaned weekly - A guard lost a loaded gun in the facility

A Super El Niño is approaching, potentially the strongest El Niño we’ve seen in a century, and Trump is proposing to cut weather agency NOAA by 26 percent to save money for taxpayers Meanwhile the amount it’s proposing to cut from NOAA is equivalent to 1.3 days of taxpayer spending on the Iran war

Have you heard stories about how the DOJ is not prosecuting bad actors? Interior's watchdog just released a report that found a company had siphoned $7.4 million worth of energy to its power plant and failed to pay any royalties. The company admitted guilt. The Nevada DA declined to prosecute.

This story is great context to headlines we often see: Stories about billionaires threatening to leave CA, as the state considers taxing people differently in higher brackets But these are just anecdotes, sometimes fear mongering and often-- they never happen!
