Imagine being a CEO of an US energy company and thinking that you work with close associates of the Trump family, only to find out that behind them is a sanctioned Russian company, really pulling the strings.

It is so true that when a missile hits my apartment, I am first unhappy and then think, "I need an election. My government has failed." But when federal agents shoot me in my car, I think, "wow, what a great government I nave."

“Ukraine needs elections. People are unhappy because missiles are hitting their apartment buildings.” If you thought these were quotes from Putin, well, no. These are statements from Trump in his latest interview.

What I wonder in all of the mask-off Trump behavior is whether Denmark and Greenland will ratify this agreement... Democratic processes are of course something the Bully in Chief does not understand (or accept).

Had 44% charge today when I had to drive a friend to the big city here, about 35 miles away. Briefly panicked with range anxiety then took a breath and came back with over 20% charge left. Could have done it again. EV driving in Iowa? Not a problem. #NoExcuse

It never ceases to amaze me how people who think Iowa is flyover country and cannot place it on a map become experts in Iowa politics around election time and tell all those pig and soybean farmers how they have to vote. Thanks, guys.

I used to have some respect for the man. "Bringing Boris Johnson to the University of Iowa gives students the opportunity to hear directly from an international leader who can challenge them to think more deeply about the history, values, and ideas that have shaped the West into what it is today."

Email today from a higher ed tech company: what to do when students push back on AI use in the classroom. No. I push back on AI use. We can have an open, critical dialogue, though... But I just overheard students complain about a prof using AI in the classroom. They are fed up with it.

First time I am walking away from publishing a text. Editor said I have to scientifically reference and demonstrate that the climate crisis is caused by industrial capitalism. Claimed it was a political statement. Not playing those games anymore. I am not citing that the sky is blue, either.

Nature provides. 45 mins of Mulberry harvesting. I will wait for a couple weeks, mix them with black raspberries, and make jam. There are millions of Mulberry trees, and people have forgotten that they taste good. Local, resilient, free food. What is better?

'How far and how fast the United States has fallen!' As Trump considers 'reviewing the UK's claim to the Falklands', and suspending Spain from NATO, @mrjamesob.bsky.social reacts.

You kind of know we have reached the last gasps of capitalism when the only use case for AI in higher ed is that it can detect the use if AI in higher ed and the use of AI in higher ed is a bad thing which is why I get twenty phone calls ad emails to tell me that I need to use AI...

It is 3:43 pm on a Tuesday in April and everybody is waiting to see if the president of the US will give the orders for a genocide he threatened this morning because the war he started is not going too well while his VP is encouraging another nation to resist the EU. Also my plum tree is blooming.

I want to thank the president for setting the tone for Easter, when Christianity celebrates forgiveness and peace. Bombing civilian infrastructure because people resist an unnecessary war of attrition is the best example of the Easter spirit. Thank you for your service.

Just watched Apocalypse Now Rwdux with my 16 year old. He has not read Heart of Darkness and could not really appreciate all the movie. But rewatching it right now just shows that the urgency has not gone away, and neither has the genius.

Incumbent German electricity suppliers said in 1993 that renewables could not provide more than 4% of electricity in the long run. In 2025, renewables provided 55.9% of Germany's electricity — 14 times the predicted ceiling.

As we are thinking about oil (againn), nowmight be a good time to think about what oil booms do to communities. Hence, my new book (free to download from the press, or, if you want to support endeavors like this, buy a print copy): thedigitalpress.org/2026/03/03/n...

thedigitalpress.orgNew Book Day: Bearing the Burden of BoomsIt is my great pleasure to announce the publication of Sebastian Braun’s Bearing the Bearing the Burden of Booms: Energy, Extraction, Communities and Landscapes on the Plains.  It is the third book…
