We’d planted dill, as one does, and it spread like mad, as some plants do when not many critters eat them. Walking around out back, something found the dill - black swallowtails! There are a couple of different instars (stages) of caterpillar. Neat stuff! And there’s enough dill to share.

My kids are mainly interested in when butterflies will appear; I’ve read that black swallowtail pupae can overwinter, and I’d guess it’s late enough in the year that these will do so. Hopefully we’ll be able to find the pupae so we don’t accidentally damage them.

Driving home tonight, southbound on the NJ Turnpike at 9:30 pm, I could see fireworks ahead of me and had Journey on the radio. It made a hopeful moment. I won’t stop believing in the promise of the USA I was raised with, but man will it take time and effort to recover from what is being done now.

Is it tacky to make my first post on the day before my one year join date anniversary? I’m not in the first million users, but was close. Thank you to @nome.bsky.social for the original invite. :) Maybe I should post a little more… would not be hard (ha!) now that the ice is broken, right?

You are up to date.
