I had such a good time reading the faux-oral history The Midnight Show. The book plays with your preconceived notions of the early days of Saturday Night Live to take the story and characters in unexpected directions. Comedy becomes mystery. Entertaining as hell. bookshop.org/a/120009/979...
More recs can be found here... they all happen to be by women but that was mostly on accident. Happy Anti-Prime Day!! (With shouts to: The Hill by Harriet Clark; Strange Girls by Sarvat Hasin; Friday Slattery as Herself by Ana Kinsella; and more) bookshop.org/lists/mk-s-a...
Annie Lord's The Project is my favorite rom-com of the year so far! She has such a distinct, funny voice. The book feels like Bridget Jones for a new generation. If you grew up loving "Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging," you'll like this one. bookshop.org/a/120009/978...
Dear Monica Lewinksy also does things on the page I've never seen done before. The form feels funny at first, then takes you on a journey that is poignant, incisive, and thoughtful. bookshop.org/a/120009/978...
Doireann Ní Ghríofa's Said the Dead is a fascinating genre blend of memoir/biography/fiction that. She's doing things on the page that are so surprising and inventive I don't even have the words to describe. If you like "May We Feed The King," it treads similar waters. bookshop.org/a/120009/978...

For @avclub.com's fall TV preview, here's an exclusive clip from Netflix's Josh Hartnett-led #Below. I spoke to the show's creator & producer about setting an atmospheric thriller in Newfoundland & how the show blends local folklore & history with present-day reality:
I have only just now become aware that NBC canceled Stumble, probably my favorite new comedy of the season… so delightfully weird and heartwarming. Why aren’t shows allowed to grow anymore💔 you should check it out on peacock if you haven’t seen it. youtu.be/0XGH5emJiRY?...
My best friend has a book coming out next year and the cover reveal was featured in People today!!!! people.com/see-the-cove...
For my August wrap-up, I wrote about craft, Phoebe Bridgers, and Katy Simpson Smith’s new novel The Maltese Version (among other things). Read it here! substack.com/@mkcarr94/no...

I just saw a piece in @thebookseller.com about this fundraiser - to protect and share a collection of over one million Black books in the UK, a labour of love by one collector, Baba Pepukayi, but a vital resource for the nation. www.gofundme.com/f/save-1-mil... Please share, and donate if you can.

A thought I’m having after publishing this is that when people (artists) steal from each other, it comes from a place of feeling: jealousy, identification, inspiration… if someone lifts something from me I know it’s because they cared enough to do it. When AI steals it’s just programming
For my June wrap-up, I wrote about the similarities and differences between AI and human magic (you can guess which one I prefer): open.substack.com/pub/thedesko...
