0-6-0 locomotives always have looked silly to me, like if they accelerate or stop too quickly they'd tip backwards/forwards, but 0-6-0Ts with streamlining is a whole 'nother level of silly (it's an adorable silly though, whimsical in the way a Corgi Husky mix or Shetland pony is)

a long, but lovely day on the iron road celebrating the opening of Auckland's City Rail Link! what a fantastic addition to a fantastic city, extremely glad I could make it across the ditch for this please enjoy this little thread of some of my highlights from today

a very good morning from Parnell station, in just a few short moments our train will head under beautiful Tamaki Makaurau

Karanga-a-Hape station is also quite lovely and provides much, better access to K Road.. ..but I'm deeply concerned about our claim to the 2nd longest escalator in the southern hemisphere being usurped, in November I'll vote for whoever promises to extend the state library escalator by 1.1 metres

I could say a lot more but I'll wrap this thread up here and leave you with a selection of photos I took of the amazing artwork Horotiu on the ceiling of the main entrance at Te Waihorotiu. I could have spent hours looking at it from different angles just watching the light catch. thanks Auckland!

I think my favourite station has to be Te Waihorotiu, which is expected to become the busiest station in the country (and rightly so, being in the heart of the biggest city's CBD), and it is expansive. I will be calling it the Tamaki Makaurau Space Station from here on out

I was however, really surprised to find that some of the brand new stations feature curved platforms, albeit quite gentle curves. All of Auckland's train fleet have gap fillers at the doors to reduce gaps, so the risks are lower, but these are pretty much forbidden back home!

if anyone has a contact in the Antarctic Division who can get me to Heard Island please let me know. I have no relevant skills to offer bsky.app/profile/mmbb...

everytime I look at the Antarctic division job ads, and everytime they need jobs like "electrician" "chef" "heating technician so we don't all die", how about they give me a chance as Chief Layabout Officer? or the Mawson Jester? this is what's wrong with our country

one thing I really didn't take advantage of last time? Norfolk Island's beautifully dark skies. being separated from the nearest large city by 1000km helps a lot, and so does barely having any street lighting and getting lucky with no moonlight. nice to see our beautiful galaxy again 🥰🥰

once again delighted to confirm that norfolk island is bloody lovely. and I'm assured there is no risk to the supply of Norfolk Island pine trees for Australia's urban foreshores for years to come

all of the above photos were taken on my DSLR with a ~10 second exposure, balanced on the ground or my bag because I forgot my tripod. this photo is what my phone produced with its long exposure mode, not too bad really. but there's definitely way more satellites visible than even 10 years ago 😔

well well well looks like I'm going to have to take a trip to Auckland in a few weeks

only took nearly a year but indeed we are getting closer to abolishing some of Melbourne's most laughably bad frequencies. the combination of a fuel crisis and an election year can be a powerful motivator. 10 minute all day frequencies and bus reform next to seal the deal? 👀👀 nah, just kidding... 👀

it's delightful to know that we may have poasted hard enough for the government to finally eliminate 40 minute Sunday frequencies on the train network. cautiously optimistic until the timetables are released www.premier.vic.gov.au/pt-blitz-mor...

rode the lovely Glenbrook Vintage Railway on Sunday, which would be a fairly stock standard branch line heritage railway, except it included a photo stop where the train reversed so we could get some good pics. almost impossible to do back home!

the beep of the PB/5 pedestrian crossing button has been officially recognised by the National Film and Sound Archive as part of their Sounds of Australia collection for this year. you love to see it

cannot put into words just how much I missed the ubiquitous PB5 pedestrian crossing button at home. without a doubt it's the world's best. full audio, tactile and visual feedback for complete accessibility. everyone needs these around the world

looks like lots of people are friendly and grateful to bus drivers it’s good we should respect them and give them space to do their thing. buses are the whales of the road
