I hope I have given fidelity, and that everyone viscerally understands: You will have to come through me.

An Iowa official defied the governor’s orders to fly flags at half-staff for Charlie Kirk, writing he wouldn't honor a man who "did so much harm"

Just come out and say "I'm a big baby," and have a little cry. These chuds have got negative vibes.

this is at least the 2nd lawsuit over AI filed by a Republican running in a statewide election in a red state -- the other is Iowa where the AG is running for re-election smacks of desperation a bit

Unearthed footage of Vivek Ramaswamy mocking Amy Acton for being a survivor of childhood abuse: "She has no vision other than to complain about what someone else did to her"

It's rather dark that the GOP has decided this is the closing argument. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Ramaswamy put up a very powerful Ad about a mother saying that her daughter, Acton, is a liar, and much worse. The Press is trying to get him to 'take down the Ad.' Frankly, anybody whose mother spoke about daughter that way would normally lead to the daughter being precluded from serving"

No, not directly, because Trump is the manifestation of the problem, not the problem itself. The indirect solution is cultural, not systems design (although the systems can and must be improved!)

We need the body politic to understand at least the broad contours of our government. I'd wager if most Americans could articulate the what and why of our three branches, and the who of, say, their reps and maybe a few SCOTUS justices, Trump never won.

Gray, Sinclair and Nexstar own a total of 21 stations in Iowa. Four other entities own six. Then there's Iowa PBS, which does good work but is resource starved.

We keep running refining assets until they crack is adding supply destruction to a market already undergoing significant demand destruction, woo.

“.. The US refining industry is running the hardest **for this time of the year** in at least 25 years (ever?). October is when typically many plants go into seasonal maintenance, but that has been delayed due to eye-watering margins and the pressure from Trump.” - @javierblas.bsky.social ⛽️

I'd note that whatever the deficiency of her final Iowa Poll, J Ann Selzer just got the regime bent in court over this nonsense. (That case was brought under Iowa consumer protection law, to give an idea of how desperate they are to find any avenue to harass.)

Kevin Collier @kevincollier.bsky.social

In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)

Hopefully Turek incorporates this into his ads and speeches.

Campaign spending from GEO Group and CoreCivic, the 2 main private prison/ICE detention companies, suggest they've mostly given up on the House and are trying to save the Senate for the GOP. Major recipients: Susan Collins, Ashley Moody, Ken Paxton, Mike Rogers, Jon Husted, Ashley Hinson

Judge Reyes: If that's what's happending, that a Federal judge is getting death threats over a golf course, I really don't think that's what the founders intended.

Again, this seems to be Republicans' big closing message for the midterms, so it's worth asking -- what the fuck are they talking about. Ask any parent with a kid in public schools if they'll so much as give them an Advil without written and signed permission. Then show them this insane shit.

Ashley Hinson claims Josh Turek supports "allowing kids to change their gender at school and not tell their parents"

This afternoon I walked into a title shop with a $3,300,000 Johnson County warrant for the purchase of real property in my pocket. Both our past and future were on my mind. On the table: almost a complete block of downtown Iowa City real estate adjacent to our main campus.

I'm not going to run this County like a business, for profit. I'm not going to run this County like a household, shortsighted.

I'd like to see something mixed use, County and nonprofit office space with many floors of residential above. But while this purchase enables something like that, my reelection makes it much more likely.

We're due to make two annual $1.1m payments to complete the sale in 2028. I hope the sellers will take a wire next time – it was a rush having $3.3m in the pocket of my rainslick.

It's a hard thing to ask folks to support spending millions on property we don't have immediate plans for. But this is damned responsible. The County buying property is the quintessential "invest in yourself."

Government so small you can drown it in a thimble.

I mentioned my League of Women Voters forum a fortnight ago, and I still wonder if it's more harmful to not have rules, or to have rules you do not, or cannot, enforce?

Sonia Théroux@soniatheroux.bsky.social

Just gonna say it: "open debate" is a format that privileges combative men conditioned to assert and take space from others. And it does nothing to help inform voters.

...and there was no admonishment for them to cover/change/reverse their shirts, I struggle. I live in the most Democratic county in Iowa, and LWV has asked Democratic colleagues to turn their shirts inside out before.

This is primarily on Phil and his supporters. I think LWV should have said something when they disregarded the announcement. I didn't say anything, maybe I should have.

My Republican opponent and I were both respectful of the timekeeper, I'll give him that. But when the moderator opened the forum with her recital of the rules, including no display of campaign material in the forum room, while three people in the audience were wearing his campaign shirts...

I am much less concerned about the mechanics than our collective resolve.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

is there anyone thinking/writing about the actual mechanics of disentangling the US government from elon musk?
