I don’t think this is exactly what’s going on, or all that’s going on. It’s not that Republicans are constructing an elaborate psychological defense against evidence that Trump is a rapist. It’s that they like that he’s a rapist, and they like rape: it enacts the power of the strong over the weak.

The vile attacks on Amy Acton need to be seen in the context of a party that *needs* people to believe women fabricating sexual assaults is common as rainwater. Because it’s pretty much the only way to evade the conclusion that the president is a rapist.

That’s also why Vivek isn’t exactly lying when he says he didn’t mean to say Acton lied about being raped as a child. He doesn’t think she lied; he thinks that being raped disqualifies her from office, because she belongs to the class of people power is wielded against, not the class that wields it.

I know it’s really distasteful and dispiriting and gross to think about, but you won’t understand Trumpist politics or the status of women if you don’t understand that a lot of people aren’t just in denial about the prevalence of rape; they are affirmatively pro-rape.

Ramaswamy’s ad aimed to enforce the stigma against rape victims that positions them as objects of suspicion and disgust at worst, patronizing pity at best. The Acton campaign now has to pitch a rape victim as something audiences aren’t used to imagining them being: competent, capable, and dignified.

The Ramaswamy ad has pushed the largest newspaper in Ohio, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, to reverse its position on endorsements. "A candidate who uses childhood sexual abuse as a weapon against the person who endured it has crossed a line that Ohioans should defend, whatever their party."

These people don’t want to win; they don’t even want to persuade. They want a world where they are a pure and rarified elite, with none of the responsibilities of actual power, only the smug gratification of being right.

“If suburban moms become convinced of the righteousness of socialist politics, we might win. But what’s much more important to us is being self righteous online.”

NEW: "Donald Trump was an active participant in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women during the mid-to-late 1990s," per new House Judiciary Dem report. Report has new allegation that Trump raped a 24-year-old and then promised the victim a visa & NYU admission, demanding she stay quiet.

These guys are being pretty cavalier with their 501(c)3 status for people who keep having to declare bankruptcy because they’re ordered to pay out so many child molestation settlements.

Marital rape was legal in several states when I was born, and other states have tightened laws to eliminate loopholes and secure a greater right for women and men to deny sexual access to their bodies. Movement has been slow and partial, but real.

It doesn’t even occur to my students that being gay would be scary and saddening for someone their age in another era. I have to explain homophobia like an artifact from an ancient culture.

Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.

i don't think we can come to a reasonable compromise with this

Unearthed footage of Vivek Ramaswamy mocking Amy Acton for being a survivor of childhood abuse: "She has no vision other than to complain about what someone else did to her"

WOW -- Vance *defends* Vivek's reprehensible ad 👇 Q: Ramaswamy's campaign put out a controversial ad featuring his opponent's mother. Some Republicans are backing away. Do you think it was appropriate? JD VANCE: Well, I'll be honest. Whether the ad was appropriate or not is not really my concern.

I do worry that midterm expectations for the Democrats have become so inflated that Republicans will be able to credibly cast any result as better-than-expected and declare victory.

I really do think that Bard is an instructive example, where the pro-perpetrator, anti-Title IX commitments of the President, Leon Botstein, served him well in ingratiating himself with members of the donor class who shared those values—like Jeffrey Epstein.

“These Title IX harpies are really out of hand, huh? Anyway thinking of you as you deal with bad press from your pedophile sex trafficking operation,” was both a sincerely held stance and also a fundraising strategy to get money out of rich guys by flattering their antifeminist priors.

We actually do know how to reduce rape. We do it the same way we disincentivize other behaviors: we punish it severely and consistently. The issue is not that we don’t know the solution, but that we lack the will to carry it out.

This is alway why our culture has a profound cognitive dissonance about sexual violence, wherein every institution will abhor and condemn it in the abstract—“We take sexual violence extremely seriously”—but will begin equivocating and making excuses as soon as they’re confronted with an actual case.

If you want to reduce rape on your campus, expel the rapists. If you want to reduce sexual harassment in your company, fire the harassers. If you want to reduce rape in your community, prosecute the perpetrators. This isn’t actually complicated; it’s just politically convenient to pretend it is.

That’s why well-intentioned calls for, say, more consent education often strike me as misguided. Rape is not an accident or a misunderstanding; the rapist knows full well that he rapes. The issue is that rape provides benefits for the rapist and for his community that they don’t want to give up.

In a floor speech last year, Nancy Mace accused her former partner of assaulting her while she was unconscious, photographing her naked without her knowledge, and sharing the images with his friends. Now, three of the men she accused have been criminally charged. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/14/u...

nytimes.com3 Men Accused by Nancy Mace in House Speech Are Charged With Sex CrimesThe former fiancé of the South Carolina representative and two of his business associates were charged on Wednesday with sex crimes and voyeurism in connection with a 2018 incident.

In her speech, Mace described her partner and his friends as a bunch of drunk assholes who habitually got women incapacitated, raped them while they were passed out, and filmed and photographed the assaults to distribute. If that sounds like frat behavior, remember that these guys are in their 50s.

One of her sons was lost at sea. His ship didn't sink or anything it just came back to port and he wasn't there and everyone on board was like oh yeah, what *did* happen to that guy?
