We're also excited for you to read @moonsheen.bsky.social's amazing story, "Brightfall" from issue 2. This is one that sticks with you. I still think about it all the time.

I talked about this a bit at NYCC and also at the Sturgeon Symposium, but part of the reason I wrote ANGEL COUNTRY was a strong desire to have new cosmic horror that isn't as completely weighted in Lovecraft lore. Lovecraft remains...an unfortunate figure to have to hang an entire genre around.
And while there's some documentation that suggests he might have started to actually address his prejudices as he was forced to interact more with the world as a whole, he died before he could not be virulently racist. So it left the genre with amazing lore attached to a very frustrating figure.
It's nice to see cosmic horror that's NOT actually weighted in fear of the Other. My particular tactic with it in Angel Country was go more for transcendentalist horror. The notion of nature being bigger and more powerful than you can EVER hope to be.

Lovecraft captured a certain type of existential horror and paranoia that, while it launched a genre (and had amazing weird striking imagery), was also unfortunately incredibly contingent on the Other and his deepset personal paranoia and mental illness that made him...well, virulently racist!
I am still ridiculously fond of this one. Anyone want some wild weird sci-fi about an otherworldly frontier town that lives off of the remains of giant eldritch monsters that fight each other in the clouds above? "Brightfall" has you covered.

The Apex Magazine 2027 Kickstarter is currently at $11,636 with 11 days to go.
We need another $9,364 to hit our funding goal and secure another year of Apex. Can you help us get there? www.kickstarter.com/projects/ape...
If this book does decently please know. I can stick angels into SO many historical timelines. There are few points in history that do not benefit from the addition of a biblically accurate angel or two.
It’s Best American day!
Such an honor to see “Drosera regina” alongside such talented authors and fantastic stories.
If you see it in the wild (bookstore, library, celebrity on train, etc) please share a photo!

The @sfcenter.bsky.social had some great programming for this year's Sturgeon Symposium but especially loved the session on Eastern European SFF resistance fiction-- sff was famously a genre for Eastern European writers to express criticism of the ruling regime with more plausible deniability.
Also loved being introduced to titles like modern author Tananarive Dues The Reformatory and not so modern author Muriel Jaegers The Man With Six Senses. Have definitely expanded my reading list.
I'm not sure what I was expecting out of Lawrence, Kansas, when I arrived for the Symposium but a haunted hotel, a buzzy downtown full of art galleries, and a Zombie Run were not on that list. It has been a very nice stay.
Many thanks again to the Sturgeon jurors for selecting me, the Gunn Center for hosting me, and @clarkesworldmagazine.com for originally publishing me! How far my story about robot space ants, family, and connections has come.
