Thank you so much to the incomparable @sarahmackattack.bsky.social for working with us on this! If you love magical, creative science communication, including nature murals in Philly, eel facts advent calendars, Skype a Scientist, and so many other worthwhile projects, please support Sarah's work!

We moved @dasl.ing to @tangled.org to dogfood the content-addressed lyfe in a big way. Some personal observations: For personal workflows, it works nicely, very much as expected. For collaboration across people and strangers, there's still a way to go. More in thread...

The biggest pain point has been review workflows. You can't easily attach comments to specific lines of code, or thread conversations. It's also missing some basic social ergonomics, like autocomplete for @ tagging or ranking autocomplete suggestions by collaborators or social proximity.

Review & approval steps are a bit muddy. PRs should have reviewers not assignees, and reviewers should be able to do verbs like Approve, Dismiss, etc. I hear there's a big rewrite coming up, looking forward to seeing what's next!

Here are some flowers for the @aster.id crew, who managed to announce their launch exactly when asters hit peak purple in north america. (They're smart like that.)

DASL governance gets a very DASL-esque update. It's written in plain language, it's short, and doesn't YAGNI (You Aren't Gonna Need It).

Chicagoland friends and beyond: Derek has been Doing The Work for over a decade. Can't wait for him to win this campaign and bring his experience, collaboration, and values to this office.

Today I am officially launching my campaign for Oak Park Village Trustee! My priorities will be climate action, making data-driven decisions, collaboration with other local govs, and progressive values. Read more: derekeder.com/blog/derek-f...

Really nice to see this! When we say "user-owned," most of the time individual users don't actually want to run their own infrastructure. But a group of researchers banding together to run infra BY and FOR users like themselves — maybe that's what user agency meant all along 🫶

Aster ID@aster.id

The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

I have an Ikea elf in my house. If an unopened Ikea package is lying around, the elf finds it and builds it when he wakes up at 6:30. Why did I wait so long to have kids?

Just today I was thinking of my fav fish meme (as one does 😅) and I realized that "organize" has roots in the word "organ", eg organize literally means "To furnish [a body] with organs", "to endow with capacity for the functions of life" en.wiktionary.org/wiki/organize

@ronentk.me mentioned how atproto stacks are starting to resemble organisms. Each product plays a role and the whole stack gets more effective because of it. Network effects! But from products rather than users

The two hardest problems in Computer Science are 1. Human communication 2. Getting people in tech to believe that human communication is important

These days I'm most excited about ATProto as an open layer for social and discovery. There's massive potential in what this fabric can turbocharge, beyond social media for its own sake.

(Remember that viral post about reposting with all the flags of your grandparents? I wanted to join the fun, but didn't. Because reasons.)

Second, I think projects that use an atmo/social lens to solve domain-specific problems are particularly interesting. Peanut butter & jelly is classic for a reason, y'know?

Two related things: first, social media is slowly shrinking. People are shifting their time to forums and groups, pushed by overwhelm and surveillance. Good stuff is still happening on big-world social, but the Atmosphere's big event-driven booms are no longer a given.

There’s some conversation in the Atmosphere right now about how we turn @atproto.com projects into sustainable businesses. One of the biggest opportunities is sitting right in front of us: give publishers back the audience development business they spent the last 20 years outsourcing to platforms.

I listed a cargo bike for sale at the beginning of the summer, thinking the timing would be right for people interested in warm weather adventures. Crickets, then 8 inbounds the past 2 weeks. Turns out everyone is shopping for new school commutes. Bikes are infrastructure.

This is wildly irresponsible. Even if there are legit uses (modeling flooding or wildfire devastation, maybe), they could drastically cut down on misinformation abuse by rendering in a lower-res illustration style. Also, watermark the hell out of it and host an image checker service.

First impressions after 24 hours with the @blackskyweb.xyz Android app: 1. Visual design is pretty straightforward, but they've found ways to show a bit more content and less chrome. It's nice! 2. Loading and switching views is noticeably snappier. 3. A few bugs, likely related to federation.

3c. This is a bigger problem, maybe related to propagation. I poasted from Blacksky app, but it doesn't show in my profile there even 5 minutes after. It does show up in the Bluesky app within a few seconds.

Overall, a few wrinkles to iron out but a very credible alt to Bluesky's app. Kudos for working through the app stores (PWA is fine but doesn't shortcut, dock, etc as well). Nothing really differentiates it today. I know the team's got big plans, looking forward to seeing what this enables soon.

Grow a bigger pie, don't fight over the slices.

in a community like ours, i think it’s tacky to say “stop using [Atmosphere app] and use [other Atmosphere app] instead” when i released @aturi.to i didn’t tell people to stop using @pds.ls or @atproto.at with @anisota.net, you won’t find me saying “ditch bluesky, mu, blacksky, etc”

Everyone complaining about the new Washington Ave connector has never tried to get a 3 year old across 6 lanes of traffic and it shows.
