ladies, is your programming - a field dominated by rich white men - driven by fashion trends - practiced as a demonstration of status - funded by vanity projects for failsons - filled with queers trying and failing to break even that's art, sorry

Nyek London@stupidhoroscope.bsky.social

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

Don't know where it'll all go, but I DO think we have an opportunity in software to break out of some of these approaches and take a much more dynamic look at our within-team change, within-person change, and learning journeys within orgs. That's pretty exciting to me.

The fact that DORA is pausing (stopping? Canceling?) its annual survey is so interesting to me. I wonder if we are moving out of the aggregate Annual Report, Acronym Frameworks era in devex

Not a single word of this is hyperbolic in the slightest. Buy your friends in cybersecurity the drink or chocolate of their choice right now. We are not doing well

truly a wild time to be alive when the cryptography world is split between those worried about quantum computers and those whose private key is “4”

#KCDUK Day two! I’m the second keynote speaker today and I’m so excited to be speaking about how to be impactful and strategic as a high level IC Check it out at 10:05!

Reciprocity is so important and I wish people understood how valued it is and how necessary it is for creating trust. It *is* one of the foundational elements of trust in social groups “Don’t take more than you’re given” and “don’t give more than you can lose” are so embedded in our societies

"they spent five minutes on this shit and they expect me to spend my entire afternoon reviewing it?" Is it really AI or is it just sparkling organizational unfairness?! @charity.wtf and I are doing a live AMA on October 21 on tough questions of this era. Join us! www.honeycomb.io/go/ama-debug...

Now it feels like whoever has the most power in an exchange is the person who can generate the most asymmetrical workloads possible. Externalising all of their effort onto others and multiplying that with AI. Effectively drowning out anything not in your agenda with endless toil Thats not great!

Toil was already weaponised in politics (in and out of the workforce), and I feel like it’s about to get unimaginably worse The worst part is going to be that most of said weaponisation likely won’t even be intentional. People already have a horrifically bad time judging work effort and costs

For so long, society has ran on implicit assumptions that you should be “in balance”. Asymmetry of effort has consistently been socially shunned It’s been weird watching all of the signals surrounding that balance get destroyed so quickly without any development of a replacement set of social norms

KCD UK day one here I come! Unfortunately I forgot my contact lenses but I couldn’t sacrifice the aesthetic so I’ll be squinting at everyone ✨ elegantly ✨ Please feel free to say hi! I can’t wait to meet all of y’all

Tech events I get invited to speak at: "succeeding as a woman in tech" Tech events I'd like to get invited to speak at: "succeeding as a creative weirdo in tech who keeps having strange side projects run away on them and wants to scale impact while staying weird"

People look at me so weird for having people and humanity as special interests sometimes but it’s absolutely a thing

“but you can’t be autistic, you’re good with people!” some autistics have penguins or dinosaurs or stars as a special interest, and some of us have people

It’s just wild to me that the reason we’re giving up on leap seconds is because the earth suddenly decided to start spinning faster and nothing ever anticipated faster rotation or negative leap seconds I love how complex and far reaching unintended consequences can get sometimes

Filippo Valsorda@filippo.abyssdomain.expert

No more leap seconds, ever! There isn’t one in December and they will be abolished in May. The last one will forever be the 2016(?!) one. Didn’t realize having experienced leap seconds in prod dates me. I’m not going to miss time going backwards, I’ll be honest. www.bipm.org/en/cgpm-2026...

What route should you take from the blue pin to the red pin, if you need to cross the road to touch the far side in between? You want the fastest route, but counting time on the road for double that on the pavement - it is more dangerous. you will rediscover the laws for reflection and refraction!

Luckily we have a very recent experience of a global virus that caused us all to collectively understand how to deal with viral threats before they cause irreparable harm to humanity Right?

If AI is being described as a virus, then shut down all AI companies before it spreads. Stop granting their reframing of every failure, their misinformation and fear mongering as great PR.

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

Can we get someone to spend some funding on solving pocket dimensions already? It really shouldn’t be too much trouble. All I’m really asking for is a quaint 500 hectare estate nestled on a busy street in downtown, preferably sandwiched between a coffee shop and a sushi restaurant. Thanks!

i personally would like to live in a large house in a nature preserve with no neighbors that is a five minute walk from grocery stores, nightlife and amenities, a good school, and my six-figure job. i don't see why this is so difficult

Just like that: poof & gone. RIP *all* of NSF social, behavioral and economic research (including psyc & cogneuro). I’m speechless.

The fact that one cannot sit down in a dress like this is entirely irrelevant. I will fast for three days and learn to float through the air itself if necessary. I need this on my body immediately. The whole collection Who am I kidding, I’m obsessed with every collection of theirs. It’s so good 😭

This is me but any cereal at all. Any of it. I won’t even kiss someone if they’ve had cereal. You have to cleanse yourself of sin first. It’s awful. Can’t even smell that shit Who invented it? I have words for them

Shredded wheat is an insane concept. "Yeah I want a fucking log of hay in a box. For my breakfast." Fuck outta here. Crazy assholes.

I don’t know how to explain to people that just because certain things appear to approximately work doesn’t mean they actually work. This was already horrifically difficult before AI and now it’s damn near impossible to get the point across when literally any trivial example passes muster

The asymmetry between me having to provide a compelling defence that they can actually understand (without the required background knowledge) vs them being able to endlessly generate garbage in seconds is just… exhausting

We arrived at the hotel just as all the local restaurants were closing so we hadn’t eaten all day but fortunately there was a little pizza stand to get a traditional NYC slice of pie.

Damn can’t believe we’re gonna have to falsify psychology pseudoscience with questionably applied AI (artificial intelligence) instead of questionably applied AI (aws intelligence)
