So, I chose 3 pieces which were all much more rooted in real schools and real problems. First up, I was recently introduced to the writing of @mpershan.bsky.social and this week, he produced a great piece of writing on what's actually happening in US schools... substack.com/home/post/p-...

I have taught in both private and public in three states before retiring early b/c the system broke me down. This is absolutely correct. Most instruction is pretty bland. IMO, this is largely due to the pressures that make consistent, engaged instruction incredible difficult, not ideology.

This really resonates with me. I’m in a lot of classrooms and this is largely what I see. (Even as early as) 2nd grade through high school!

I'm about to claim that there is no data from the last 30 years that lets us characterize how american teachers teach math, that the last reliable info we have is the TIMSS video study...anybody want to point something out before I make an ass of myself in writing?

From a DI teacher's guide.

For people who want to keep yelling at me because I'm not immediately repulsed by the idea of providing scripts to teachers, this is (pretty close to) what I was handed as a baby teacher. These sections were called "scripts" and no students were harmed in the making of math knowledge.

Gavin Grant and Kelly Link of Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet are doing a campaign to help pay down the mortgage on their new and used bookstore. This is an awesome couple who support the writing community, so please support them! I donated & got some awesome stories & Blackwing pencils!

"Thank you for backing our campaign! And, extra thanks to everyone spreading the word on all those social media sites we're not on. "One surprising Indiegogo thing: we don't get emails when people back the campaign. In 2016 when we ran a Kickstarter for a limited edition of a John Crowley book..."

Not unpopular here! @mpershan.bsky.social & I once co-authored an essay on this very topic, nodding to our friend @dylanpkane.bsky.social. "We need more teaching – and less preaching – to influence the beliefs of educators. We should replace scientific misconceptions, rather than debunk them."

Unpopular opinion; studies and critics debunking learning styles are taking on low hanging fruit & are avoiding answering the more difficult & much more useful question ‘How can we better differentiate instruction so we can reach every student in our classrooms?’

I'm pretty unabashaedly a fan of direct instruction for teaching procedures. The JUMP books do a fantastic job breaking skills down into manageable chunks for kids, which actually makes it easier to teach kids how/why the procedures work (which in turn supports the procedural learning).

When I worked at the White House, we constantly had to correct the speeches and memos that started with "The cost of college is rapidly rising." It's one of those zombie ideas that is hard to kill. College can be expensive, and moreso than it was for our parents, but let's get the facts right.

Matt Barnum@mattbarnum.bsky.social

New-  We've all heard about the spiraling, skyrocketing, and soaring rates of college tuition. In reality, undergrad net tuition education has been stagnant or even declining for roughly two decades. So why do very few people know this? www.chalkbeat.org/2026/10/01/w...

I can't wait for the new story Chris read last night to be published. I've been thinking about it nonstop since.

Hi friends, I am reading some prose at this tonight (online)! Should be fun. Even a lot of fun maybe.

"What if you started going into that good night in a rambunctious manner, really going nuts, but then, once you got into that good night, you switched to going gentle? As far as I can tell, there are no Welsh poets outlawing that kind of behavior." buff.ly/atMd0Cg

What really upsets me about all this is Alpha calling a pattern of bad academic actions an "anti-pattern." It's a pattern.

Benjamin Riley@benjaminjriley.bsky.social

FOURTH REPORT: Former Alpha School students speak out I have just posted my latest report on what student life is *really* like at Alpha School, based on interviews with several student sources. They describe anti-patterns, rocket ships & pirate ships, and "getting nuked." Here's a short summary.

My constantly in-progress high holiday playlist...over the past few years I've taken off some of the classic rock and replaced it with more recent tracks, I think Cool, Cool, River --> Our Prayer --> Not --> Forgive Me Lord is where we currently find ourselves.
